Overrated cookies & sour dough
So Servo was exploring the Announcement thread today and noticed many comments concerning overrated anime choices. Comments like "I like 5cm PS but all 5cm PS videos are the same."
I would personally name a list of anime that is overrated with graphical data and percentage values, but apparently the good people of a-m-v.org have already done that for me.
Most Used Anime
Personally, there's a lot of 5cm PS videos that use the same themes over and over again. Themes of separation and eternal love are probably the ones most used. It's also not surprising to see a 5cm PS video set to sentimental music. And everytime I watch a 5cm PS vid, I always expect the "adults crossing the rail-road tracks" scene. How are you going to convince me to like your 5cm PS vid if I seen 50 of them?
So name some anime used in AMVs that's overrated. You CAN use anime in the list above, but also supply a reason why they're overrated.
And if you're so daring, maybe one of you good people can tell us how to avoid making an overrated anime into an overrated AMV.

I won't list overrated anime, because I think that's a very subjective collection of sources, but perhaps the .org's list covers that the best. However, the simplest way to take an 'overrated' (or overused, I think is the more proper term here) anime and make something fresh or different is to twist what people expect or perceive as a video using that source. For example, use 5cm per second, but instead of rehashing the ideas and story presented in that source, take it in an entirely different direction. Use the train crossing bit, but engineer it so that one of them is hit by the train, one of them dies, and build a story around that. All of a sudden, you've got something new using an overused source, and people aren't expecting that. If you play to what people are expecting, then it will most likely be labeled as 'overrated' because it plays out exactly as they predicted, which isn't all that interesting. People want to be surprised, or at least entertained, and you can't entertain someone when they already know the outcome of what you're attempting to show.
Now of course, there's the issue of making the videos not to entertain people, but for yourself, which there is nothing wrong with whatsoever. In fact, I think that's how it really should be, but in this community, there's guaranteed to be someone that will see a video, ignore any sort of constructive feedback they might have to offer, and label it 'overrated' or 'overused. It's just the nature of this community, and the only real way to avoid it would be to separate from this community. Make videos, but don't release them (or don't release them here). Because otherwise, you're bound to have somebody saying "oh, it's been done."

Actually rather than overused anime I think it's overused style people bitch about, although they say it's overused anime. AMVs using 5cm ps are almost without exception slow drama pieces. So it only takes seeing a couple videos before you're tired of it because they're all very similar.
OTOH it took me years to get burned out on Evangelion videos. I'd see a well rounded mix of comedy, drama, action, parody, etc. using eva so even though it was the same source the videos didn't feel the same
Naruto is another example. When people bitch about naruto being overused what they're really bitching about are the neverending flood of angst fight naruto vids. The occasional ones that are comedy or drama not focused on fights generally don't get bitched about.

Given the average on rating is above statistical average, most of all AMVs are overrated.Hey, i didn't start the mis-use of words, i just answered the question as posed.
