Generally, what is the overall opinion of them, and how do competitions regard them?

They are generally well received and have been the recipient of awards, praise etc in my experience. Most commonly they are either given their own category, put in with comedy/parody, or categorised on an individual basis.

"Restrictions breed creativity." - Mark Rosewater

My experience say that for a lot of people the review ability isn´t that high because they´re just trailers. However they´re treated loved/hated like every other amv.
For me I like it when trailers combine music, voices and sounds at one time and I do like to watch good trailers very often.

Trailers are generally well recieved but the word of caution is when you try to do a serious one. Sometimes a serious trailer is viewed comediecally due to people thinking of the contrast between the character talking and the original character. Or scenariors that might not fit quite right.
I'll tell you my biggest pet peeve with trailers is though. Inconsistency in dubbing, I've seen a stupidly large number of trailers that will use multiple characters for one voice depending on the line or the scene and it's just distracting when that happens.

Though I am quite fond of trailers. Hagaren's Stranger than Death one is wonderful. Oh and the World Is LIving is also another reallygood one.
I like trailers that try and be semi-serious, while leaving inside jokes to us, the anime viewers.
