Do you really think about your ops?

Post by hasteroth » Fri Mar 27, 2009 7:32 pm

I've been noticing alot of Perfect 10s and straight 1s and then a bunch seemingly random ops for videos. So I was wondering... how many of you actually give serious opinions and actually think before they submit?

I think that if you're not going to be serious with your ops, then don't submit an op, just use quick comment.

I don't op all my videos myself and I'm not very good at figuring out just why I did or didn't like it but only still think about it carefully when I give ops.
Please note that my "Favourite AMVs" list has a bunch of Chiikaboom's videos at the bottom, and a few at the top.

This is significant because I am often regarded as a Chiikaboom "super-fan" but it's not entirely true.

BTW I'm asking a question and replying to it myself in case you didn't notice.

Sureeeee...

But I say screw the question, I'll just give my answer.

When I leave an op, which is rare, I do think about it.

I do.
Mostly x2. I only give ops for exchanges and I write serious ones in hopes that they'll be returned in kind.

I know i personally do give very lonng, detailed opinions in hopes they will help when i do, although before i didn't. But i do the list like:

Originality - blah blah

Quality - blah

In both good and bad points section then do overall and review in general. But like latly i've redone some bad old ops to try to actually help people.
Looking for beta testers!

Because of a bad experience that I've had with an Op a while back, I always check out the person offering the Ops before hand. If I consider them to be good and think that I can benefit from their advice, I post my video in their Op thread. I usually get better/higher quality Ops this way. I did once receive straight 10s on an Op though, but the person seemed to find a lot of faults with the video. This irritated me a bit.

I really do think about my Ops and like to get high quality feedback. In turn, I try to give the highest quality feedback I can. I once wrote a three page (double spaced in Word) Op. The video had really little wrong with it, but I like to go through every aspect (Orig/sync/sound/etc) and pinpoint the good and bad of them. I then write up how I generally feel about the video.

The other day I got messaged from someone on the Tube who I had left a QC for here on the Org. They were new to the Org and asked me where they should go to get more feedback on their video. They mentioned this about the Op exchange: "I've seen the Opinion4Opinion stuff, but that seems rushed, and more to boost numbers than to get real feedback." I thought that it was interesting that someone new who hadn't even done an op exchange before thought this because it is right to a degree.

I pride myself on having left 118 opinions as of this post while being on the "Most Useful Comments" list because I give honest and detailed feedback, not because I just copy and paste crap to get a large word count >_> I have given a few "joke ops" in my time, but the vast majority of opinions I've left have been thought-out and honest. I will admit though, that when I did give opinions on a regular basis a couple years ago, I tended to rate higher than I would now. Kind of getting into the same territory as the "Averages" thread, I considered a score of 7 to be merely okay, whereas now I would rate 5 as average. I wouldn't say I was being dishonest in that sense, I just had lower standards.

However I don't really give ops anymore. All my comments I now leave on people's announcement threads, but nothing has really changed. I'm a bit more succinct now than I used to be, but I like to think I still say exactly what I feel.

Extremely biased test group you're working with here. Those that would even admit to answering the question in the negative are mostly of the "never post on the forums" and "i'm only here to download that awsm vid i saw at XYZcon" variety.

When I give ops I think quite a bit about what I'd doing.

Note: I didn't say I think quite a bit about the video, half the times I haven't even watched it. It's just thought that was put into what I'm actually trying to achieve...
