question about sound

Why do most people use no sound in their amvs from the anime shows that they're using? Is this just tradition that the only sound being used is the song?

It takes a certain amount of audio mixing skill (That most amvers don't have and have never thought to cultivate) to use parts of the original audio and make it work, though it has been done before.

Not so much in the last part, but I think the first time he uses it is an excellent use of original audio.

doing that disqualifies your amvs in some anime convention contests, i believe (at least if you use english dubs).

I must say that any contest that does is stupid, imo. I mean what makes it so different if it's Japanese or English?

Actually quite a few cons do it at the request of the U.S. licensensors for IP-infringement related liability reasons.
