Technically, no, you can't control what people think of you.

You can control yourself, however. Yet, there are stimuli and there are responses. In the case of rumors and social standings, when it comes to your own image, you can alter the stimuli, which is yourself and your behaviour.

However, the response to stimuli is not up to you. You cannot control the response, but you can try and steer it. And see where t ends up.

In my case, I believe people are thrown off by my first post(s), which, though not offensive or really bad, were written in an awful mood.

I have since changed the stimuli. I am yet to see any response from earthcurrent

Everybody chill and enjoy thyself. Leave the damn thread alone. It has mostly exhausted it's original purpose.

i don't know ... *flips through 1984 ...* hmm looks like you can ... well just not practicaly for people of our budget and social standings.

Well, and even for someone with a better budget and higher rank would have trouble with some...

I, for one, am still convinced Bush is an asshole

PS 1984 is probly my 2nd favorite book of all time. Excellent stuff.

yea yoru right .. we need a nuclear war and to try to build up a society again and fool every one into thinking were constantly at war so we can use the war times measures act and legislation of it's ilk... etc, etc ...

I liked Brave New World by Adelus(sp?) Huxley more than 1984.

i've never read brave new world, but i have a friend of mine that has, and he read BNW revisited. He said that they were crazy books he just couldn't put down. 1984's ending though ended pissing me off ... i finished reading the book at 3:00am, when i relised what had happened i jsut threw the book across the room and weht to sleep ... then about 4 days later i picked it up again and read the ending again with out the mind numbing fatigue.

Aldous Huxley. That one is also quite good, but I think that one has to do more with technology and it's dangers, while 1984 is more about the dangers of people and their psychology. By default, I find 1984 scarier.
Also, I personally always saw the world of Brave New World as somewhat distant, but 1984 - much more immedeately possible and unsettling.
The ending I have no problem with, but understandably it's not a most encouraging one. Neither is Brave New World's, really.
