NEW Princess Mononoke AMV with Famous Chinese Song!!!

Post by Heaven_and_hell_is_earth » Thu Mar 20, 2008 11:12 pm

OK, this is my first video in a while and my first in 2008. Not content with using a Chinese song with the anime Laputa last year, I have used another Chinese song for this new video, this time with the anime Princess Mononoke.

Here's my marketing spiel:

The context for this video is about the seemingly perpetual cycle of conflict between humans and their natural environment, as well as between themselves. I thought it was a topical subject given that global human population increase will put massive pressures on the surrounding natural environment during the first half of this century, and the continuing human conflicts going on worldwide (e.g. Darfur).

Within this setting comes a person who is trying to make sense of it all and trying to minimize the damage. This person is Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke and he takes it upon himself, with the help of San, to fight for what he believes in. Against adverse conditions, he achieves some success, but the conflict will be repeated over and over again. Yet Ashitaka, driven by strong emotions, has set an example of how to confront the problems and take effective action.

The song itself is very famous Chinese song in the mid-1980s, which was recorded by over 60 artists (I only know one of their names - Tsai Chin). I'm sure any Chinese people here will recognize it (I'm a Westerner and only found out about it quite recently). I think the song fits in with the context of the video. Some people advised me to include subtitles last time I used a Chinese song, so that the English-speaking audience can understand what was going on, so I've included the English lyrics on-screen this time. My Chinese is rudimentary so I had to rely on a translation from a website (http://www.waitingyu.com/music.htm ; the only one I can find, strangely). I adapted it because some of the translation doesn't seem to make sense in English and to improve the flow a bit. I'm sure native Chinese speakers can pick out mistakes, and for that I apologise.

Anyone familiar with my videos knows that I'm not a fan of flashy graphical trickery, and I make no apologies for that, because I think that for the purposes of this video, it is not necessary. I have also used WMM. I do apologise to those who find the video quality sub-standard.

So, it leaves me to say: hope you download the video and I welcome all constructive comments. Conversely, non-constructive comments will not be welcomed.

:D

Lets see.. it's 2:14am, I'm doing absolutely nothing. The AMV sounds like it could be interesting. So I'll download. :]

/EDIT

I didn't really enjoy that so much. At first, I thought it was subtitles, but it was actually the song lyrics, which was one thing I was relieved about. Well.. the video quality wasn't that great. And the lyric sync was all wrong, and the mood, and the feeling didn't match the song. Like.. when the lyrics 'Let me embrace your dreams.' appeared, I wasn't expecting a guy to be like.. split up into pieces by a sword, lol. I was expecting something more.. extravegant, and less.. bloody. Basically, I didn't really feel the mood, or see even how the scenes were suppose to fit in, which is one of the larger thing I grade on. Although, their were a few scenes.. here and there that fit nicely, like at 3:07. Some scenes were a bit to fast for the song's pace, and some were too slow. And then their was others that fit the song's pace decently. Once again, the scene choice for the lyrics of 'Let our smiles fill with youthful pride', I didn't want to see explosions at that point. So attempt to practice, and work a bit on your scene choices. It makes watching the AMV alot more satisfying, in many point of views. The mood of this AMV would be alot better to be a mixture of happiness, and some sadness, but not action. I'll give it a 1/5, sorry. It just could have been tons better. Anyway, I look forward to seeing you improve, and remember, try to work on your scene choices. :D

Woohoo! Three videos in a row where I've received 1/5 as the first mark!

You're entitled to your opinion and I'm cool with that, and I'll try and take into account your criticisms for next time.

However, let me put up a sort of defense for my choices. The lyric sync "was all wrong" - I disagree with this because lines like "slowly open your eyes" were matched clearly with eyes opening slowly. "Let me embrace your dreams" was matched to scenes showing Ashitaka carrying out ("embracing") the dreams of San and the dreams of the forest spirit (to survive spiritually in the face of humanity). "Let our smiles fill with youthful pride" was matched to scenes where youthful pride was shown (hence some action scenes). Also, there weren't a whole lot of people smiling in Princess Mononoke, so I chose some scenes which showed people grimacing more, as a sort of ironic twist in a world full of pain and hurt.

As for pacing, the song starts off slow and then builds up to a pulsating beat. So I chose slow scenes first, and then built up the action as Ashitaka and San put their money where their mouths are and start trying to act to change things.

There were plenty of scenes with sadness in the video (such as Ashitaka crying and dropping half dead onto the floor) and a scene of happiness right at the end. I mainly included sad/action scenes for the most part because I wanted to reflect the sadness and struggle inherent in the conflict between man VS nature/ man VS man.

Once again, it's your interpretation and I'm fine with that, but I thought I'd put up my interpretation as well.
