  • Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

Multi Anime - Hearts Align - Trying actual effects!

Post by Kiszoki » Sun Jul 26, 2015 7:03 pm

I wanted to try something other than just syncing clips and fading, so here is a quick attempt at doing something more. I'm also trying to mix anime for the first time. Feedback appreciated!

I'm not much of an effects editor either, but I thought this was nice. I was expecting a bit of a clusterfuck of effects when I clicked the link, but you kept it really simple and clean and I really like that. I think you made good choices anime-wise; my only complaint is that Steins;Gate looked out-of-place because of the dull colour palette of the series. Every other anime you used had very vibrant colours, so Steins;Gate stood out in comparison. I also thought the shot at :57 went on too long, especially since the cuts were pretty fast up until that clip.
The masking transitions were pretty smooth for the most part, except the one at 1:02 was a little weird. There isn't really any movement in the shot so the transition was a little awkward, but otherwise they worked out well. When you're masking, be careful of invisible frames though (disclaimer: I have no idea if this is an actual term or not)--for example, right at the beginning I noticed this mask

and how there are some missing masked frames there. Most of the time you won't notice these while you edit, but once you render it out it becomes more obvious.
(I thought your username was familiar, but it wasn't until I saw the transition at :53 that I remembered why; I commented on your Flashback AMV and I remember pointing out those transitions, haha.)

Ah I got found out! I was really stuck for a transition there, and i hadn't actually used that transition since the Flashback AMV. Don't use shitty glow transitions, noted. I'll be honest, laziness is the prime reason that there is so much uncleanliness in the video, I'm still debating whether it should stay up because I really am not very happy with it.

Thanks for the feedback again though, I do appreciate it!

Wow you got good eyes, I could not see that unless I paused it and advanced frame by frame.
