The thing where you lower the music to let them talk breaks my immersion. I find it very distracting.

I agree with Lingchi. And I personally feel that the dialogue parts weren't really necessary. Good AMVs should be able to speak for themselves without audio from the show. I also want to advise you against using footage that has subtitle or television text in it. Those were also distractions. And to help you get a better understanding of the pace of the song, you may want to try clapping along to the beats. This will help you determine what scenes are too long and when you needed to cut.

thx for the input guys, also for the voice overs from the character, should i just generally avoid using dialogue from the characters in the anime, or just to not lower the music when they talk?

I've seen people do things where the music stops and a clip from the show plays for comedic effect. I've also seen people let characters talk over naturally quiet parts of the video and that kind of worked.
