Three AMVs from yours truly...

Post by yearzero » Tue Jun 25, 2019 3:15 pm

Two of these AMVs I made earlier this year and hadn't posted (End of Eva, Bleach) — and the other is more of a gaming music video but calling it an AMV because the cutscenes from Metal Gear Solid 3 are on another level and it feels more like an AMV in spirit and also the first AMV I finished. I'll be posting more on my vimeo because Youtube blocked the last two AMVs I made based on audio.

The Eva AMV focuses on Asuka, as the other Eva AMV I did was of the whole series, and mainly focuses on Shinji and also Rei. Also in the Toxic music video Britney is wearing all red and one could (I might) argue that she's channeling Asuka's energy riding on the back of a red Ducati.

The Bleach AMV is mainly because Bleach was on of the main anime I was watching at a period of time when I was watching AMVs in my youth, the 240p and hardcoded subs in this version is on purpose because it's probably closer to what I would have seen on youtube in 2007 — though I don't think the anime was as far as the Heuco Mundo arc by then, anyway...

And MGS3 to the Dusty Springfield song because it just...fits so perfectly. I later found out that the song was written in 1964, the year the story for MGS3 takes place. It makes me think of an old James Bond or spy movie trailer.

Let me know what you think!

I really like the Metal Gear video. It just feels the most sync'ed out of these three, the one that's the most deliberately and successfully cut to the lyrical and musical cues in the song. These cutscenes were created to look as cinematic as possible so even though these graphics have aged, well, about as well as anything 15 years old probably ever does, this AMV just looks great. I've never played any of these games, but damn, this is a tragic and sort of beautiful video. I'd seen it before you shared it here and enjoyed it but this time around is the most engaged I've been watching it. This kind of song/video pairing could come across as pretentious but this is a great example of how that doesn't have to be the case at all!

End of Evangelion AMV accomplishes the impossible task of convincing me that a nightcore remix of anything can actually be enjoyable. How much this is a function of the work you put into the video, I'm not really sure, but overall I did enjoy this.

Video quality of the Bleach AMV held me back from getting into it on any level whatsoever. I kind of applaud your willingness to try something like this, to make a video that reflects your personal experience with the anime and to deliberately defy the ridiculous 4K/60fps expectations that many viewers bring to every AMV they watch. Unfortunately this one did not click with me.
