(Almost) All Piano Keys

Post by TaranT » Sun Nov 14, 2004 5:25 am

This is an experimental video that uses the piano key effect as the primary visual style. It was inspired in part by all the effects discussions that appear every week or two ("FX: Hawt Or Naught?").

The video has over 1000 "keys" in five different flavors all playing over the movie's storyline.

The music is an instrumental trance remix of Coldplay's "Clocks".

The title is a nudge at another piano key AMV.
But as I mentioned in the comments, it's also a good description of the movie's theme.

Title: Evolution Redux
Music: Clokx by Ron van den Beuken
Anime: Metropolis

While I normally despise piano keys effects, they are put to good use here. They help to make a very hypnotic visual in conjuction with the trance music, which keep your eyes glued to the screen until the video is over, even if you could care less what is happening in the clips themselves, much like ErMaC's "Soul of an Angel" video.

[good shit]
Another excellent addition of a video from you Mr. TaranT.
Nifty.
The piano keys flowed with the AMV quite well. I say it served its primary style pretty good.
Different kinds of piano effects from blurring/magnification/ and all that crap.
Magnificent feel.
Love this song.
Good shtuff.

Nah, just for bringing it up again. I couldn't care less if someone kicks the crack out of my piano keys. Not like I'm possessive over them or anything.

It's folks like you and Tarant that keep bringing it up :P. Then again, I replied, so *shrug*

I had the same problem; had to force myself to watch the background. I think I wrote something similar in my review of SoaA: for the most part you can forget about delivering a story if you're using a lot of effects and just some fancy editing (since SoaA doesn't use much of what most of us would call FX).

I'm not sure how well this vid works, either. What I'm hoping to do is contribute something substantial to the whole FX debate. We can talk about FX until we're blue, but it's better to see them in action as clearly as possible without distractions and then work from there.

I can live with that. :D Puts me in the same class as Vlad and Kusoyaro. :o

Seriously, though, I didn't mean this to be a putdown in any way. Let's face it, "Evolution" is probably THE most popular AMV that uses piano keys. (It's #42 on the Top-10% and #50 on the top stars list.) I thought about mckeed's Ah! My Goddess video, but there's no hook for a techno android theme. Same for Wonka's Appetite for Dynamite.

I should look through some of your other vids. I need a hook for my "barn door" project.

:? Lots of that in Metropolis.

Hmm...I thought I used only a few ways. I usually try to minimize the number of styles in a single video. Otherwise, it looks like you're throwing paint on a wall and waiting to see what sticks. The thing about piano keys and other effects is that there are literally thousands of ways of using each one. There may be much better methods than I used here.
