I have just recently uploaded my first two videos ever. The first one (see below) is Tenchi Muyo! OVA, using the song "Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy" by Queen. It's a light-hearted exploration of some of the girls in the Tenchi universe.
The second is made with footage from "Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within" and the classic from Green Day, "Basket Case". It is also a more light-hearted, cynical (yet hardcore) musing about the themes and somewhat weak story elements in the film. I'm probably overanalyzing it, so just go watch them... ^_^

Wow...uh...normally, I would have overlooked something with "first" and "video" together in the same title, but I'm glad I didn't this time. I downloaded your Final Fantasy one, by the way. I haven't seen Tenchi Muyo. So...here's my little breakdown.
Stuff I Liked
- the concept. This is, by far, what hooked me the most. It is unique in the sense that it is a Spirits Within comedy - but not comedy in the "ha ha, lol" sense of the word. It's a wry humor - sort of like making fun of the story. I love it for that. I don't think many (if any at all) other Spirits videos have done this.
- timing. It was absolutely solid in here, and I didn't feel like your effect choice interfered too much with it. There was one, but I'll address that later.
- lyric matching and mood. Again, tying in with the wry humor thing, the lines made sense in an interpretive way. I particularly liked the Hein and the "melodramatic fool" lyric. It's true of him, really.
Stuff I Was Iffy About
- wave/frequency effect. Since it seemed to be the basis of the video, I can understand somewhat why it appeared so often. However, there were times that it just made the screen cluttered. In particular, I noticed it near the end of the video, where more cuts and other effects happened.
- random images during the bridge. Okay, who doesn't love "You spoony bard!"? Really, though, even if it only flashed for a split second, you could tell. It only adds to the humor if you know what it is, and that scene went by far too fast to act as a joke, but slow enough to confuse the viewer. The production company logo wasn't so bad, because it's the same CG as the movie, but still...your video had enough entertainment that it didn't need that. I laughed at first, but now it just jolts me from the viewing experience.
Stuff I Didn't Like
- resolution and quality. The quality was pretty nice - passable at worst. However, the resolution bugged me. Was it widescreen or something? Regardless, the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen were distracting. I kept feeling like I needed to up the resolution, but it wouldn't get rid of them. It became especially apparent when you used effects that went outside of the image's dimensions. When an effect scrolled off into that black space on the top and bottom, it was extremely noticable - out of place.
All in all, this is a very fun video, with a humor to it that requires just a little bit of thought to understand. I like that type of comedy best. You shouldn't have to laugh out loud to find something funny, and this video is a wonderful demonstration of that. Mostly, you just have one little technical issue to work out. Otherwise, kickass job! If this is your early work, I can't wait 'til you've "gotten good" at it! ^_^

PS: the FF one gets my recommendation to anyone who looks here. It's a departure from the ordinary, for sure.

Thank you SO much for the review! If you have time, would you mind cut/pasting that into the review section on my video download?
In response, yes, the video was in widescreen format, however I edited it in a 4:3 ration (following the PDF tutorial on editing video, I added the black bars in VirtualDub. Were I to redo it, (which I won't, 'cause I want to play with NEW ideas next time! ^_^) I would probably edit it in its native resolution, and then add in the black bars (to fix the vertical stretch) after the final has been put together.
Thanks for the great review, though! Your insight will certainll help my future endeavors!
BTW, the Sponby Bard and intro lady/text were all done around (I think) 3 in the morning, 'cause I was rushing to get this possibly in for a con... I doubt I would have put them in were it not SO late... >.< I wonder if WATCHING it that late makes it funnier...?

You're welcome. Also, if I do that, I will need to do the expanded version. This is a condensed review for me, and I don't like giving short opinions for real. So, give me a few days and I'll have the completed version of this for you, in addition to what I've written here.Lareon wrote:Thank you SO much for the review!
