First AMV: Fafner

Post by Hanako-Hime » Sun Sep 18, 2005 10:38 am

Alrighty...This is my very firstest AMV....And I realize that I majorly suck at video editing. I gather that Windows Movie Maker is bad...so I skipped on that one and used this program called Studio 9 (which was fairly easy to work with, now that I understand it).

In The Beginning, I totally did not understand all this stuff about video compression and whatnot, but after ripping my DVDs to the computer, I was appalled at the amount of space they took up....I only pray that the 70-odd MB that my mpg is isn't too much...Either the program I used doesn't give you options on compression, or I was just too stupid (or tired) to find it....

Also learned something wonderful. I started out carefully and painstakingly editing 3-9 second clips, saving them individually....and I got halfway through before I realized that I could save the PROJECT....and I didn't have to waste time making individual files for all the clips. >_<

I opted to keep the clips I had, instead of re-doing them, so if there's a problem with some kind of funky voodoo compression thing, please let me know....Even though I'll, like, sooooo never do it that way again...it's so much easier to just save the project!

Effects...all I used was fade-in-out and crossfade...I think that's what they were called. I didn't really like most of the canned effects (AND they didn't really fit with my idea for the video), and I'm not even sure if it's possible to even make custom effects, much less HOW to do it, if it is. So....I hope the lack of flashyness doesn't deter from the video.

I'm sleep deprived right now, so I really can't think of anything else to say, other than that it's REALLY SPOILER-HEAVY (this is your warning, PLEASE don't yell at me for spoiling the series for you.), and it's soooooo not in chronological order.

I am aware that I re-used a very small clip of Shoko in her Fafner. I did this purposely, for effect, as the second time is sort of a flashback, and it's in conjuction with different footage.

Also, a note, the video shows up better when it's not fullscreened...it gets a little pixel-y in some places when it is. I'm sorry for that...I'm not sure what caused it...Probably my own stupidity...*sweatdrops*

There are also a few other things, like the blink of the opening credits that I couldn't quite get out of the tree-shot....and the fact that I missed Maya's lips moving in the "if you'd only let yourself believe" clip....It's harder to see when you're working with a small preview...

*bows low* Please do tell me what you think, and if you can give me any tips on how to better my skills, they would be much appreciated.

Thank you kindly, in advance, for taking the time to watch my video.

YOU ARE AGAIN REMINDED THAT THIS VIDEO IS SPOILER-RIFFIC.

Apparently, post edits are illegal or something, so...An addendum to my post...

If you did not like my video, please do not just give it a 1 without a comment or an explanation of what I could do better....that's just mean.

I know it's not that great. The point of making a first video is to learn from it, though. I can't learn if the flaws are not pointed out, and suggestions made on how to make it better.

CONSTRUCTIVE critisicm = gooooood. No explanations = baaaaaaad.

Give me 1's all you want...just tell me WHY you did so, and how I can get better, please.

oke i havent seen the anime nor have i heard the song before and i havent touched studio 9 ever so i cant help you with technical tips only basic ones.

first off for a first video it isnt amazing but it very decent ^^ even though there are a lot of flaws i enjoyed watching the video alot and i dont regrett downloading it at all ^^

so im gonna go on ahead with some basic tips.

Audio Sync very important but in this cause less important then a action video but still there were some cuts you made that if you delayed them even a little or had them a little sooner would sync the music better making it a better viewing experiance.

Overall editing it try to stay clean cut on this and maybe a fade in out here and there but nothing more again only if you edite these kind of video's.

I see you try'd to lyric sync and for a first time you did oke try to not take move of the stuff so litterly next time ^^ a referance to something is better then just blasting it full out. also at other points you went a little to random on the lyrics and the overall flow ^^

now im to lazzy to continue again so =) uhm i donno haha if you want to know more msg me or pm me

Thank you for your comments. *takes careful notes* I'll keep these tips in mind for my next video ^_^

On another note, I think I know what caused the bad quality on some of the clips...I think I had a bad compression level on the conversion of my first DVD of the series....The clips from the other two DVDs seem to be of a much better quality....*scribbles notes to herself in her AMV notebook*
