I didn't dislike the clean-ness of the encode, that was fine to me, but the size and playability.

Just make a single pass encode with a set quality (--crf 20 for example). I think a set bitrate of 2400 was far too much for the low res version. Wich made it unnessecarily hardware demanding (mainly cause of CABAC putting the CPU to it's knees).
Even when you really, really, really want a two pass, you will at least see wich bitrate was needed for your source.

Ahh, yea.. I tend to go overboard on the bitrate... I'm fine as long as its under 100mb

..maybe I'll rectify it in the future |:
