it's not that everyone is necessarily against the contents of riot gear and what it can be used for, but more of how common and overused it is; to the point where every video that uses it usually appears the same/or similar. i don't like them either, most are cliché grunge textures. i've never liked the thought of premade effects to begin with -- or well, chroma-key bait.
