I like the atypical nature of this romantic Ah My Goddess! AMV. The song, while having sappy lyrics, is delivered in the Me First and the Gimme Gimmes punk-cover style so it avoids the inherent saccharine nature of the original version (and having heard the Boys II Men rendition many, many times, I'm glad for the change). The video source, Ah My Goddess! OVA, is a staple of sappy romantic AMVs (example) and it was nice seeing it used in an upbeat/comedic romance video (the series is, after all, a romantic comedy).
I like the inserts of the chibi Urd and Skuld - they're a bit distracting, but cute. I enjoyed the wrong-ness of the "come to my bed" part. I thought that the lyric sync was great throughout and I loved bits like the "end of the road" at 1:05 and "you and I" segment at 1:41 where the on-screen action/movement syncs to the lyric and/or beat (I also tend to do this in my videos).
And while I don't remember reading Where the Sidewalk Ends, I do recall seeing the book at my school library (the cover art is very memorable) and recognize the title.
An easy 5/5 for me.
Plus, this video gets a Konata "Kick Ass" Award.

Glad to know I was of help!Ileia wrote:So I downloaded the file. And I got really confused. I wasn't sure what it was. Then I saw "music video" and it dawned on me. I don't know WHAT I might have done if it wasn't labeled.
Well hopefully the video can still be enjoyable purely as well...a music video. I'm by no means saying it can't be enjoyed without knowing such things, but it does enhance things imo. Then again, I'm old.Esrhan wrote:I have a small problem over here:
1. I haven't seen the anime.
2. I don't know the song's origin.
3. I have no idea what this Children's Book Series by Shel Silverstein is.
4. The title doesn't ring a bell.
Just how much entertaiment am I missing here? The thing I mostly got something out was that the winner wasn't a typical sappy romance video set to 80's music.
My site is down and it was hosted off there. I replaced it just because you said somethingNessephanie wrote:Why don't you have an avatar? :\
You can thank Pwolf on the footage. They were R2's. Even with my R1s and scripts, I couldn't get it very clean.Kalium wrote:Fixed. HTH. HAND.dwchang wrote:I also imagine most of you aren't old enough to know the original version of this song (or get the title of the video), but if you do, hopefully you'll enjoy it moreso.
Oh, right. Yeah, I recognize the title. My sister (my little sister, dw, and you have a decent idea of how old I am) was a Silverstein fan years ago. Where the Sidewalk Ends, Falling Up, The Giving Tree, and A Light in the Attic could all be found in my house.
The song rings bells only vaguely. I do remember Boyz II Men, though.
It was a fun video, though. I envy you so much for having good quality AMG footage to work with.
Yeah I was pretty sure it'd be around the chorus when folks go "OHHHHHHHHHHH!" Glad I was right .dj_ultima_the_great wrote:Ah ha! It took me until the chorus kicked in, but I definitely recognized this older Boyz II Men piece. I have to say that the original is WAY better. XD
As for the video... something was strange about it. I'm not sure what, nor do I mean that in a bad way. It was a good kind of strange. It fell somewhere in between all of those sappy-type AMG videos and those comedic romance-type ones. From the title and what you said about it, I was expecting something a lot more serious, but this was a nice surprise. Good editing here.
Sweet OAV video quality, by the way.
As for your 'strange feeling,' like you said, it's good so I'm happy. I was particularly hoping to not make a typical sappy AMG video or one that was too comedic (this is supposed to be a *romance* video afterall). I'm glad I succeeded in your eyes .
You young folks thinking AMG and the 90's is old! Oh wait it is -_-;;kisanzi wrote:Very fun stuff. Thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish, and bonus for bringing back sources from the 90's. AMG FTW.
Thanks! Your icon is creepy...code_chrono wrote:Anyway, back to reality. The video itself was enjoyable, and I overall think it was well done in many aspects.

"The book has been banned from some libraries for its attitude towards child behavior (at times encouraging messiness and disobedience). People claim that it "encourages" children to break dishes in order to get out of having to dry them. One of the reasons this book was banned was its mention of pirates. Also, one of the verses describes the death of a girl after her parents refused to buy her a pony. She became so sad that she withered away and died, causing her parents to regret not buying her the pony—some people thought that it was considering or recommending children to commit suicide. It is number 51 on the American Library Association's list of the 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000.It is also charged as promoting themes to young children about horror, violence, suicide, drug use, and cannibalism."

It saddens me to read that since I have fond memories of reading these and having a good laugh. Yay for the overly protective parents of this generation!

Now although I love a good romance video (even the boring ones ), this sentiment is exactly what I was hoping for. Something just about anyone could enjoy since it was Upbeat, Cute and Fun.Lok1990 wrote:Hmm alot of nice lyrical synch ^^ normally i found many romance amvs are boring but yours is quite special and have some fun elements in it. I like it and i give it 4.3/5
Thanks!
Like I said earlier, I'm glad folks aren't "mad" about the atypical nature of this Romance Video. As I said in the video profile, I wanted to avoid the most obvious thing folks would expect from me while still creating a "romance video" so to speak. I'm glad I found a happy medium.Willen wrote:I like the atypical nature of this romantic Ah My Goddess! AMV. Then again a large part of that I credit to using a Me First cover, but seriously...they rock! \m/
...but did you really have to cite my OWN video for the sappy example? T_T
Anyway, I'm glad to see a positive reaction to this. I was kinda scared >_> Thanks!
