Ilya's hat is called a Ushanka. It's characteristic of russian and mid-asia attire, commonly mongol and northern china.

Well, now that you have me thinking, I'm curious as to how I came to that conclusion also.

Let us see:
Image

Ilya was first introduced to us in the first episode amid a very sad vocal. Even though she was smiling and giggling, the atmospher spoke of loneliness and death. I read these as someting that accompanied her everywhere, but I felt that it wasn't because she dealt death and sadness to those around her, but that it was the way she felt inside.

Whenever, I think of death, loneliness, and sadness, I think of the being alone, in a cold dark void, but here, the image of Ilya constructs a different portrait for me.

I was immediately aware and focused on her face and hair. Although I could not see her expression, the color white was stored in my memory. Her european origins was immediate apaprent with her white hair and fair skin. I won't say that other people's can't have teh same features, but it's not typical. Next is her purple color, a color I associate with death. In this case, it added further emphasis. Combined with the music and sounds, the image has a certain affect.

Instead of simply a cold dark void, an artic tundra amidst a winter storm came to my mind. The land is nearly always flat and with snow and ice all around. There's nothing around save the songs brought about by the wind and snow. It is a barren landscape. Standing there, I cannot help but feel despair as the cold creeps into my soul and my body becomes numb, unable to the recognize sensations of life.

From there, my thoughts move on to Russia, more precisely, a land I connect with Russia, Siberia. In the summers, the grasslands and tundras are an amazement of life. If ever I have the chance, I would like to ride across this piece of heaven, naturally, I'll be riding on a horse. But in the winter, it is another world altogether, a world I recognize as a wholly unpleasant place to be in or die in.

Image

I could not clearly see her attire in whole at first, but i felt that her hat was familiar. Furthermore, she was wearing a scarf and a coat. This only reinforced the notion that she's form somewhere cold and forbidding. Her smile as well made me think of a princess. White > snow > serbia > princess.

But what's near serbia that could make me think of a princess? Anastasia. Thank you Disney.

Image

It was right here that everything initially came together. I knew where her hat style is from. It was the last piece and the clearest indicator, I thought. She was definitely, russian, but most of my "evidence" were based on associations of thoughts pulled from images and emotions, nothing oncrete. That is until episode 4.

Image

I don't know about you guys, but this facial expression and attire combination screams Russian.

Lastly,

No more doubt about it. She is a russian.

Ehh, you may want to hold off at that.
could be spoilers, who knows wrote:At this moment, we don't who are Assassin's, Caster's, or Lancer's respective Masters are or what the Master's genders are.
Hey, that's 50%... Besides, what's mentioned now is that Saber = Arthur, just uh, transgendered in summoning?

But still, who knows? :D

I'm not sure if you've seen episode 13, but from that episode it seems that Saber has always been a girl.
Here's the explaination I wrote:In episode 13, Shirou watches Saber pull the sword from the stone. The wizard(Merlin maybe?) calls her Arturia and we can see that she's a girl. So she's always been a girl. The wizard goes on to explain that whoever pulls out the sword will become the King of Britain and will no longer be human. Since a girl can't be a king, I imagine the magic of the sword made everyone perceive her as a boy. And if she's no longer human, that could make it even easier.
That's how I see it anyway.

To pop in and weigh in on the Russian thing, as a Russian -
That hat is not an Ushanka (I should know, being a dedicated Ushanka-wearer)

That aside, I think you're right in the theory of her origin (and even the 'Rasputin' thing). That clothing seems very resemblant of early 20th-century style among the higher and middle classes; Ilya is certainly a Russian name (albeit male).

As far as von Einzbern, not unreasonable either - a lot of the upper classes in Russia were in fact immigrant German nobles (again, I should know being 1/4 German in the same way); even if you look at the late Russian monarchy, you realize that by blood they were over 90% German (due to traditions among the Romanovs to always marry German nobles).

So yea, you probably got it, Lyrs :)

The only problems I see are the lack of flaps and furriness. The basica shape seems to be the same. What do you think it might?

Well, "ushanka" means "ear hat", so the lack of the "ears" sort of... disqualifies it.

This is a fairly popular type of hat in Russia though. I don't know what it's called, but, eh, even my mother had one. It reminds me of the Cossack "Shashka" (not to be confused with the identically-named sword) a bit, too. The coat is very characteristically Russian-looking.

Anyway, what about Berserker? That should give a clue...

Episode 14 was pretty damn impressive, I can't wait to see it subbed. 8-) This show freaking rocks. :o

The preview for next certainly has a lot of people citing "no freaking way!" It'll be interesting to see how they introduce an erotic scene from the game... without actually doing so. :P Or will they?

There's always the choice of no sex, so given how they approached the bath/wash scene, I'd expect Shirou to run away again. We could also have the scene just be implied. Regardless, I doubt things could jump to that end yet. It's more likely that Saber will regain her mana from the true Excalibur.

Episode 14.......*inserts exclamatory comment*
Brutal! Absolutely brutal. As Rin and the others try to run as far away as they can, Archer is left to fight Berserker. And MAN that was one hell of a fight; that Berserker is seriously one stubborn Servant. Archer really released everything he could from his bow and arrow, to his feathered blades, up to his Noble Phantasm the Unlimited Blade Works. Supposedly, he was able to kill Berserker 5 times (just how many lives does Berserker have), but in the end Archer was defeated.

Archer sprouted out lots of quotes in this episode. Has anyone figured out his True Name yet?
You don't know how much I want the OST!!! The music at the end of the scene really rocked and the new ED sequence was a nice touch.

Now for the preview of Episode 15....
