If two brothers were that friendly, are people going to assume that they're gay and into each other and there's likely going to be insest????
My thoughts exactly. And then there's the editing out of anything even remotely gross or gory. I mean, really. My little brother drew pictures of monsters that were way grosser than the stuff the dubbers have problems with when he was six!

What's sad is that anything animated is assumed to be for kids, or at least of a juvenile nature. (Looney Toons were originally intended for adults, as were The Flintstones and quite a number of the early Hannah-Barbarah cartoons.)

I so totally agree with you Brigid and Anime_Flower. Right now we are living in a society where everything is a controvercial issue. Everything is being questioned, nobody knows what is right and what isn't. It's not only a problem with animes, look at what's going on in society itself. Although animes are only a reflection of what we live through (or not) some people can't grasp the fact that maybe what they see in the "cartoons" is actually what you can see everyday.

I didn't know that The FlintStones and Looney Tunes was for adults......but now that you mention it....................^^; ..................yare yare

Not all that much, particularly with the Flinstones, which started out as a parody of The Honeymooners, which was itself a comedy piece.

As for Looney Toons, Hannah Barbara, and the old MGM cartoons... well... Bugs Bunny, and once in a while Daffy, crossdress; wolves chase after curvalishes girls, Tom, Yosemity Sam, Spike, and other random characters have been known to smoke; there are several gags involving charactures of famous movie actors; several characters have ingaged in partial to near full strip teases; and at least one short included a scene with a bubble dance (a woman holding a semi-translucent 'bubble' dances around a stage, never fully removing the bubble but moving it enough so your fairly certain she isn't wearing anything). I've barely even touched on the cultural references that wouldn't make any sense to most people under the age of sixteen.

"Adult" entertainment has shifted meaning over the years.

Thanks for the agreement Underworld_Princess. It does seem that the powers that be take everything way the heck too seriously. They need to take up yoga or something to releave all that tension.

i decided to watch some of bugs bunny and stuff like that after you said that, and you're right! wow, i've been watching those shows since i was, like, 4 years old, and i had never once thought they could be ment for adults....why do people seem to think that adults cant watch cartoons? i mean, even if they were ment for adults, i would still watch them...like futurama....but still, a lot of that stuff isnt very appropriate for little kids....

I didn't think of it either until my Dad told me their history. (He grew up in the fifties and sixties.) It's really to bad that 'adult' has come to mean gross, overtly sexual, morally barren, and just plain bereft of any redeeming qualities.

Not to sound like a prude or anything. That's not my intention. But think about it. Looney Toons is now considered juvinile entertainment while the majority of the stuff on AD involves gratuitous blood, guts, and sex. Lots and lots of sex.

Personally, I'd rather see violence with some sort of purpose. Like beating up evil demons.

I totally agree. It is really sad. Like when many people hear the word 'anime' they automatically think of pokemon or something and never try to actually watch a good anime.

One time I told my mom that I would watch one of her weird documenties if she agreed to read the first book of Fruits Basket. (She likes good romance stories...) She always thought anime was for kids too. Well I don't think she got through the first chapter. She said it was poorly written and the characters were not well developed. I couldn't believe that she would think that.

Well I guess I have to give her points for trying... some people don't.

Poorly written? Not well developed? :(

Well, at least she tried. (My mom wasn't too keen on anime either until my little sister got her hooked on Fruits Basket.)
