Yeah..just saw this not sure how old it is. But there are numerous facts supporting the fact that he is dead..considering throught the entire series spike and vicious are always say only they can kill one another, and hinting that if one would die so would the other. And before spike leaves they all think hes going to die but he says "im not going to die im going to find out if im really alive." And the indian guy Jet goes to and says when someone die there guardian star falls and spikes star is going to fall soon. And spike does get stabbed and shot several times..sufficient to say yeah he died..i almost cried when i saw it so did other bebop fanatic friends of mine..very sad ending. Takes the cake on my list of saddest anime ending but also very very awesome. My favorite Anime.

He's as dead as Julius Ceaser, there is no doubt. Spike didn't die on those steps he died with Julia in his arms. He was just going to do what needed to be done to Vicious. It was alluded to earlier on with a star going out when a warrior died. We saw that during the episode's credit sequence with Spike on the ground and his last words about it "all just a dream".
This was the way the series needed to end. There was not going to be a world with an older wiser Spike. There was not going to be a world where he could not seek out Julia. It was the reason he kept moving and kept hanging on. That ending was one of the few times where the show stopped being entertaining and it approached becoming art.
