She doesn't give it back persay, she just stops wearing it. They're relationship seemed strained from the get-go of Destiny, Athrun had wandering eyes and Cagalli had that pending political marriage. Athrun going back to Zaft didn't help matters, especially when he found himself on the opposite side of a battle with Kira, Cagalli, and the rest of the Archangel gang. I for one am still holding out hope for the two of them, however.

See, I think the reason we never got a resolution on Athrun and Cagalli in DESTINY was the same reason the show was lacking...well...prettymuch the same reason everything else didn't get resolved.
Morosawa and her staff cut it WAY too close to the deadline WAY too often (leading to one of the staff members posting some grievances with the writers on his blog...later pulled cause I don't think he was counting on it spreading so far or fast *still got the cap of it*), and, as a result, with no time left, they just kind of rushed together and ending which was so torn through nothing they built up to got proper resolving.
There WAS talks of Fukuda trying to put a 40-minute bonus episode on the DVDs to tie up the loose ends, but given the overall failure of the series compared to its predecessor, it seems Bandai pulled the plug on that idea.
