They do tend to exaggerate with the grain/dither but most of all they literally waste bitrate for nothing. Aside for the fact that they keep upscales instead of shrinking the resolution back to the actual amount of detail.

DVDs or BDs. As long as you have a BDPlayer (possibly one for your PC so you can actually rip them to use them for AMVs), I'd say the latter, since the quality in BDs tends to be much better than DVDs (unless the BDs are just bad upscales, such as ones done by Q-TEC). The cool thing is that Japanese BDs sometimes have English subtitles if not audio, too, so you can actually understand instead of being stuck with moonspeak and runes.
Prices are quite high in Japan, though, so can't blame you if you only feel like importing the series you really care for.
