I just marathoned this show. I loved Gankutsuou, so I was expecting something along the same lines, but wow. Gankutsuou changed the setting and a few aspects of the plot, but was essentially the same story. With Romeo X Juliet, it's like no one had even read the play. They got lots of familiar names, but beyond that there are no similarities in plot at all! Shakespeare as a character? Dragonhorses? The entire Capulet family gets slaughtered in the firt two minutes? What happened to the house rivalry? What is this bullshit about a tree? And Juliet is Zorro.
WHAT. THE. FUCK.
This has to be the greatest deviation from source material in history!
Now I know why the internet community considers Gonzo to be dead. They pull shit like this. They could have easily pasted any other name on this anime and I would have enjoyed it. The story and characters hold up themselves on their own just fine. To pass it off as a Shakespeare adaption is pure insult.
This show is an abomination and Gonzo is dead to me.
