He's probably off to the side, either running the sequencer or sound board.Bakadeshi wrote:wheres Kyon? Haruhi couldn't drag him into it?Willen wrote:An animated gif! I've been rewatching some episodes and I've come to episode 9 (14) - Someday in the Rain. Out of curiosity, I've been trying to track down the sources for the quotes that play in the background audio during the long shot of Yuki reading in the clubroom.
Compiled from various sites and message boards, here's what I've got so far:
11:42 - tongue twisters and pronunciation exercises
12:29 - lines from the detective drama Furuhata Ninzaburo (古畑任三郎)
12:33 - lines from the Japanese game show Panel Quiz Attack 25 (パネルクイズアタック25)
12:41 - lines from the anime Glass Mask (ガラスの仮面) or its older incarnation Glass no Kamen (ガラスの仮面)
12:53 - parody of a line in the anime Air (this one was easy *1)
13:01 - puns of various Ace Magazine names published by Kadokawa Shoten, more specifically Shonen Ace
13:16 - lines from the j-drama Trick
13:24 - parody of Detective Conan (aka. Case Closed) (another easy one)
13:31 - lines from the long-running drama Mito Komon (水戸黄門) *2
12:36 - reference to the anime The Rose of Versailles
12:43 - I cannot find a reference for this one phrase
12:45 - line from Mobile Suit Gundam (need a more specific reference)
*1 Daisuke Ono does the voice of Itsuki Koizumi and Air's Yukito Kunisaki. Anyone who has watched Air would recognize that phrase.
*2 This one was tricky. The listing I found was written 水戸黄门 which when babelfish'd Japanese to English became "Mito yellow?". Searching for 水戸黄门 on Google gave me many Chinese links. Translating it from Chinese-Simp to English gave me "Water □palace gate". Taking a chance, I Googled "Mito yellow gate" which gave me these links. Doing a little reading up pretty much confirms the reference.

DAMN! Good work on tracking those down. You should seriously consider adding those in the Trivia section of the Encyclopedia.
Hmm, something tells me if this series does get licensed, that very scene is going to be totally rewritten with their own jokes.

Which I believe is fine since a joke is only funny if you 'get it'...angelx03 wrote:

You'd HAVE to use lines more recognizable in any dubbed version. I'm thinking of famous movie quotes or TV series quotes that have similar themes to the ones featured in the original TMoHS segment. For example, use lines from Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? for the gameshow portion, and stuff from detective shows or movies (Sherlock Holmes, or Colombo, maybe?). Possibly throw some well known dubbed anime quotes in there, although it would have to be really obvious stuff where the characters say it every episode, like "I choose you!". Or, they could go the total geek route and use Sci-Fi movie quotes like AnimEigo does. "That's not a moon..."Bakadeshi wrote:I wonder who will be the brave soul to undertake THIS one.....angelx03 wrote: Hmm, something tells me if this series does get licensed, that very scene is going to be totally rewritten with their own jokes.

Actually I ment more the entire project of translating Haruhi.... I emagine this will be quite hard to match up both voices, and the skill of Kyon's Sarcasm in an english version without loosing too much of the show. Kyons sarcasm pretty much MAKES the show afterall....Willen wrote:You'd HAVE to use lines more recognizable in any dubbed version. this will be a challenge for whoever undertakes it without royally screwing it up
