The dialog is a reference to the comedian Hiroshi (ヒロシ) whose gag was recounting pitiful events in his life followed by repeating the line, "I am Hiroshi." (ヒロシです) while music plays in the background.Lyrs wrote:What was the Tsubaka/seashell scene referencing?
As for the visuals, I'm assuming it's a spoof on KyoAni's typical animation techniques used in contrast with the dialog for absurd effect. Although KyoAni isn't the only company to animate a scene like that...
The end gag was for those people (like me) who didn't get the "Tsukasa desu" part of it a laugh. Heh, sometimes simpler is better.

It's an analog rotary phone. Disregarding the fact that they live at a shinto shrine they also do not live in a metropolitan area so it is not out of line at all for them to still have an old rotary phone.spuntish wrote:What the heck was that phone that Tsukasa was using in Ep. 5?!?! That's like from the 50's or something. For a show based on today's world (what with the MMORPG's and the Virtua Fighter 5 crap), that phone seems oddly out of place...
All the old folks can come out of the wordwork and laugh with me if you remember party line service here in the USA.

It's funny to me because I have noticed several USA fans not realize that in Japan Azumanga Daioh WAS for otaku. It was marketed as such and published as such. Dengeki Daioh is a seinen publication but it is also otaku material.dokool wrote:So I just got into this show and I'm somewhat enjoying it - definitely Azu for otaku.
