If you're incredibly picky, it drifts at episode 1
but you have to consider that the anime is OVER while the manga is still going-and I don't thing Arakawa-sensei was directing the anime-after the anime advanced past the manga, they had to make it all up themselves

In any anime recreation of a manga there are bound to be differences from Day 1. It's the conversion of format that does it, for the most part.
I still kinda wish the anime had stuck more with the manga storyline, but I suppose they couldn't keep up the production indefinitely.
(Pretty sure I've said this before, but the manga has a bit more lightheartedness to it than the anime. The anime is down right **depressing**. I like both, but good grief, there's only so much I can take.)

The people who made the anime planned from the start to take FMA in a different direction than the manga. Having seen the anime before reading the manga it is very interesting to see what creative liberties the designers took with the anime.
The anime's story is alarmingly different but excellent none the less (certainly one of my favorites). I would highly recommend the manga to anyone who liked the anime since it is essentially a new story placed in the same world. There are some similarities, but enough is different to set the two apart.

I read the manga first, so I tend to nitpick the anime.
My friend started recording and watching the anime before I started to (I had seen 16 eps, and NONE of the ones she was watching) I had played the Fullmetal game for DS, though (which is like watching the highlghts reel or something)
Lesson learned: Don't discuss the anime plot with a manga reader

That's the opposite of how I'm usually introduced to a series, FMA included. Usually I run across the anime first and then run like a chicken with its head cut off trying to find the manga when the show goes on hiatus.
Thank heaven for libraries.

That's too bad. I love to read! If I could, I think I'd like to live in a library. (Though it might be hard having to be quiet all the time.)

this conversation reminds me of Scheska ^_^ (Ed: "Thank you, bookworm!!" Scheska: "I'm a ........worm?")
The manga just exposed a bigger plotline, too: the humunculi are going to sacrifice a whole TON of people for the philosiphers stone.......and not just a city, like in the anime.
they're going to use the entire country of Amestris.

Seriously? Then why are they so gungho on getting a particular 'human sacrifice'?
Granted, I'm only up to volume (what is it) 10?
