Steamboy

Post by narcted » Tue Mar 22, 2005 3:34 pm

I went and saw Steamboy last night at Nuart Theatre in Santa Monica, CA. It is showing there this week only and it is subtitled. There is not much parking there and the theatre smelled funky. (I think it already had con-funk from a weekend of otaku.)

Overall, I wasn't very impressed. The movie felt long. It's a lot of eyecandy. I was impressed by the animation of the machines, but not much else. The story is confusing. Not much on charcter developement. I overall felt the movie was ridiculous.

There are some questions I have for anyone who has seen it. Also if anyone else would like to discuss the movie, please do.

Am I to understand they had compressed the entire contents of the cave into the three steamballs, which is what froze over London?

Was the point of the Steam Tower just to demostrate military potential and then just be destroyed? I mean, it's like Dr. Steam (Ed) always intended for the thing to be destroyed. And for the people of London not to notice this huge thing being built in the middle of London is pretty ridiculous.

The 'Akira effect' over Victorian London is cool.

So it sucks? Thats no good, yeah the commericals didnt make it look very good either. Not sure how u could make a entire movie about a kid flying on some steam thing.

I saw this one at the CinemaDome in Hollywood, Dubbed.

Don't even bother watching the dubbed version, great huge chunks of an already thin story are hacked out. The chosen dialog is mind numbingly stupid. It's sort of like a lot of the lines in "the lost skeleton of Cadavra", only they weren't joking. "This invention could mean great advances in the field of science".

The mechanical design was great though, and the CG blended pretty flawlessly with the cell stuff. Of course the steam castle seemed to change size depending on how you looked at it... but other than that.

What I really want to know, is who the hell would climb out on that 90 story building to ride that carousel?

I am resurrecting this previously dead thread to be the official Steamboy thread.

Really steam boy was a amazing anime but you have to be able to sit through dialouge and mere plot. Steamboy really was meant to be a great action anime but more of a concept one with a vivid scenario that could mezmerize rather than attract by pointless killing.

Don't be fooled however, this anime does have action, but not like the kind you see with cowboy bebop, samurai champloo and others. There are no great hero's, or incredibly strong people.

I really enjoyed Steamboy despite the kind of weak story. Its more or less a film you watch for the sheer awesomeness of the animation and visual effects. The mechanical and architectural designs are absolutely beyond incredible which is exactly what I expect from the creators. Those who'll watch steamboy will remember it more from the Akira type of massive destruction than for it's story and characters.
