Xam'd: Lost Memories

Anyone watching this?

Wiki

(from ANN)The story follows a boy named Akiyuki who is heading to school with two friends when an explosion occurs. In the mysterious light from the explosion, Akiyuki transforms into a creature called Xam'd. Xam'd goes on a rampage which is only stopped when a red-haired foreign girl appears. (wow, talk about abridged version. -_-)

It also seems to include two warring countries, a character that's almost laughably similer to Nausicaä. And some freaky mecha.

So far this series has blown me away. It's by studio bones, so the art and character design is very similer to Eureka7 (indeed, some plot elements are so close as to be considered eureka 2.0 IMO). The animation itself, is amazing. The entire thing has an incredibly huge number of keyframes, occasionally the actual framerate seems to drop somewhat, which makes it seem like the character is having a conniption, but in general it feels like almost movie quality. There's also large amounts of screen motion, I can really see this as amv material. Lastly, the main character's personality for once seems to strike a nice chord between doormat and obnoxious.

Oh, and it has a really classy opening.

Discuss!

I watched the first episode last week, but all of the ones were in a weird format that KM Player didn't like. I eventually switched to GOM Player and got it working without anything out of place, but then I saw the subs. They were atrocious. It was like watching an old VHS of a subbed anime movie. I got through the episode, decided I hadn't seen anything special, and dropped the show.

This show is supposedly available on the Playstation Network for anyone who has a PS3 that's hooked up online. The beauty of it is that this show gets premiered before the Japanese! :o

I decided to watch this since I really enjoyed most of Bones previous works, and this is no exception. Great artwork and very smooth animation, not to mention a number of likable characters.

Honestly though, the thing I'm addicted to most at this point is the OP...

seen the first 3 eps, seems pretty interesting, hopefully it explains everything later rather than leave us in the dark like many series

Wasn't sure what to make of this on the first ep. Stuck around...and so far, liking where this could be going.

Fortunately, Bones has a knack for being able to make a generally enjoyable cast of characters with a lot of their shows (in this case, particularly enjoying Akushiba. Even if he's prettymuch gonna be relegated to comic relief in the long run, he's doing a good job at that, so...)

I watched the first two episodes via the Playstation Network, enjoyed it, and thought it had a lot of potential. Also, it was freaking gorgeous- as well it should be at 1.5GB an episode (high bitrate 720 AVC, I believe). However, I didn't watch anymore beyond the first two.

It's only a rental through the PSN store, with no option to 'purchase' it- and at $5 per episode, that's just too much for not being able to actually own the episode (even if it's limited to being played back on your PS3). At that cost, it's probably as much as buying the DVD would be when it (presumably) comes out. Strike Witches through Crunchy Roll/BOST-TV is $3 an episode for un-DRM'd downloads as a comparison. Granted the SW episodes don't look nearly as good as Xam'd does- and I don't mind paying a bit more for the higher quality. But add in the whole rental (you can only watch it for 24 hours after you first start watching it...) thing, and it makes it less reasonable of a price to me. I'd probably have paid $5/episode if it had been download-to-own, but I'm not paying the cost of a Blu-Ray movie rental at Blockbuster for a half-hour episode I can only watch for a day.
