to a few of the questions:
i use photoshop. i assume most others posting do as well.

magic wand? for this thread? mostly. for my profesional work? sometimes.
i vary with what i select with. opacity masks, quick masks, channel selecting, ect. i run the gambit.

oh, and the gimp and paintshop pro are not the equivilent of photoshop.
they're low end programs with a very different learning curve.
even fireworks isn't quite upto par with photoshop (though many prefer it's more user friendly interface. kinda how some people like vegas over premiere)

i use Photoshop9, i use to have photoshop7. and before that i used paintbrush pro. it took me months to figure out photoshop. all the tricks and shit. but i highly recommend it.

a myspace photo thingy i did for a friend (before i knew about the magic wand)... i'm vary proud of it.
