lol the one with the gun ehhh, well i didnt render that...that good... i mean i stopped at like 75% take note to the white patches i was to lazy to finish
and to answer your question, it takes time to make a clean crisp render, and even if you get a nice render the white outline is cool i almost always use it, even when i got a perfectly rendered pic... idk why...lol

For the one I added (the bottom shounen-ai one) I used photoshop. First I went through with the magic wand tool to take out as much of the background as I could (since it was a semi-simple background. The lasso tool is also helpful, particularly with the more complex backgrounds), then zoomed in and erased any extra pieces of the background that was left/smoothed out any rough edges. And voila! *^_^* If you mean quality, I never resize my images more than once. The 'save for web' option is your friend.
