I just found that the free editor Photoplus, listed in the sticky thread, has an animation editor. I tried it and it's easy to use. I made tis in about five minutes from four picts. Resized the picts, added them as layers, opened the layer I wanted for each frame and exported it as a gif animation. Anyone should be able to make animated gifs with this. Best of all, it's free.

virtual dub saved this scene as over 800 frames originally, the original un-optimized size was 450 mb. If anyone likes this one I'll go back and adjust the colors for you. (it was a night scene if you haven't seen the ep.)
