Those drives are garbage. In my everyday job I work on Dell Laptops that use those Matshita drives. They fail a lot. Many also have media compatibility issues for certain burnable media. We probably order at least a few every week to replace bad ones. If your machine is under warranty still, I would recommend contacting the manufacturer.
Also, just to make sure the drive is bad, have you pulled it out and redocked the drive in the laptop? Its possible a pin on the connector maybe be loose. You may also try going into device manager, deleting the drive, rebooting, and letting windows re-detect the drive. Just some things to try.

.. and THAT was also the way you could tell Kendal's PCM DOS -vs- Gates PC DOS back when they were both versions 3.0+vinylvengeance wrote:... Its possible a pin on the connector maybe be loose. .. too bad IBM couldn't wait for the Right Operating System to be used on their Future Home Computers without needing a Quality Control Supervisor's Opinion -vs- a Management's Bottom-Line Evaluation!
.. today we call that kind of thinking "Crisis [ n. kiki ] Management [n. gaiko]" -- where someone HAS to DIE before something is known to be Wrong! [[ it can't hurt ya if it doesn't kill ya! ]]
