I was mistaken when I said "...you might try using FFT3dfilter at a low setting. I guess there are a few versions floating around with different parameters..."; I was thinking of dfttest. In any case, fft3dfilter is worth looking into. It should be fairly straightforward to use, as the main parameter to work with is sigma. Try something like fft3dfilter(sigma=2.0) and tweak it from there.
