re-linking dv2 files

Post by Minion » Sun May 20, 2007 1:10 pm

ran into something recently. not sure if it's already common knowledge, but i figured i'd share the experience/solution.

was making a short vid with some dvd rips off of an external HD.
worked on it a few times , and then i unplugged the external so i could take it with me to work.

when i got home from work, i opened premiere and all of my clips displayed the avisynth message saying the source could not be opened, or my dv2 file was obsolete.

i figured out that the first time i edited it, i also had my thumb drive plugged in, so the HDD was assigned a different letter this time (drive F instead of G).

now that was the problem. here was the solution.

i opened the dv2 files in notepad. the first 3 lines read:
DGIndexProjectFile08
1
42 G:\TENJHO_TENGE_VOL1\VIDEO_TS\VTS_02_4.VOB
so in the file path, i just changed the G:\ to f:\

i wasn't expecting it to be that easy.

Once I tried the same with the path after I moved the files, but the .dv2 didn`t work after that, I had to reindex the vob. I wonder why it works in your case and in mine it didn't.

Now if only we could find a way to fix d2v files that break without ny hard drive problem...

To avoid having to do that, you can just assign a letter to the drive, so it always plugs in as that letter regardless of what's the first empty one in the alphabet (except for the extinct drive B). My iPod is always Drive H, even if I have no other external drives at the time and my last internal letter is E.
And God spoke unto the Chicken, and He said: "Thou shalt crosseth the road", and the Chicken did cross the road, and there was much rejoicing.

I've actually done this and had it work (saved me a bit of time)
I moved my valid d2vs to one of my externals (as well as the vobs) and then edited the .d2v files on the other comptuer (using notepad).

with the exception of filenames, I changed the entire filepath of all vobs indexed in that d2v (somewhere between 5 and 8 vobs per d2v)
worked like a charm

well if you have multiple avisynth script files for like single episodes. It can be a pain to change the letter drive. It happened to me and all my bleach episodes. No way was i going to open up like 100 avisynth scripts and edit them lol.

You can just change your harddrive's letter back to the one your avisynth script files are linked to.

Just right click my computer > Manage > Disk Management > and right click the drive and change the letter :D .

hope this tip helps someone...
