Vote against Warpsharpen

Post by Flusel » Tue Jul 22, 2008 7:39 pm

I have noticed in recent releases of Fangroups as well as AMV, that many of them are using excessive Warpsharpen. I admit it is a very good sharpening method, if used cautious. But really, even a small amount of Warpsharpen can really kill the beautiful nature of handdrawn lines because it kills the corners and sharp edges of lines. It also sort of crystalizes the smooth background art. If you use it on Anime with many smooth drawings (AIR, Kanon and Clannad!) please do not overuse it. I rather like some smooth footage than crispy but clinic and unpersonal drawing. What do you think?

You're absolutely right, of course. WarpSharp is extremely evil and should only be used when absolutely necessary. It doesn't improve the quality on 95% of the material out there and that's a conservative guess. People will nonetheless continue to use it regardless of this topic, simple because a) it sharpens the image and they don't care it causes a massive destruction of detail too, and b) it's mentioned in the big guide, so it must be an awesome all-round filter even though the guide says it should be used very carefully. Much like with Deen and vmToon, fighting against WarpSharp is a hopeless battle.

I'll be making a note of it in my postprocessing filters guide. Think this is a good enough example of going overboard? Or do I need something even more blatantly messed up?
