Adobe Premier Elements 4 Crashing Problem
Hey, I've been using Adobe Premiere Elements 4 for about two and a half months, and for this time its been working absolutely fine with little to no crashing. However, this morning I've been battling with an absolute nightmare, its been crashing every time I try to open up an amv file ive been working on for over 80 hours and am 3/4 of the way through editing. Any other file I open up with the program works fine, but with this file the project will load, go to the editing workspsace, but then crash and say "Adobe Premiere Elements has stopped working"right before it lets me do anything. Does anyone know what kind of problem I'm having, and if and how I can fix it? If I lose everything Ive been working on for the last two months I think I'm going to absolutely lose my mindd..... 0_o

Hrm. I assume it's a PPJ file?
Do you have access to another computer you could load elements on to see if it will open on that? It'll complain about not finding the files, but at least you'll know if it will open.
I'm no expert on Elements, but I've had other versions of Premiere do this. Usually it meant opening it in another installation of Premiere. Instead of 6.0, opened in 6.5, or instead og 6.5, in Pro, etc...

Premiere elements actually uses .prel files instead of .ppjs, but I bet imagine pretty similar in code.
Yeah, I installed Elements 4 on my Home PC and the file seemed to work okay on that. So now that I know its not completely corrupted to hell, what can I do so that it'll open? Will I have to reinstall Premiere Elements?

The video files are 24 fps huffyuv avis (since whenever i encoded to lagarith all i got were large, laggy low quality files that didn't work) and for the audio just a standard encoded mp3 file. I also added in one or two photoshop picture files, but I don't think that would make any difference. I'd be surprised if it were a problem with the file types I was using, since it was working fine for over a month and a half of working on the video. I was however working with 24 fps footage in 29 fps mode since premiere elements wouldn't let me change the project file to 24 fps mode, not even at the very beginning.

As contrary to your thought process as this may seem, "it's been working for a month so it can't be the problem" is a logical error when it comes to working with these things - hell, even editing with XviD fan subs will sometimes work for a while before crapping out and corrupting the project file.
My first inclination is that there might be a big problem with the incorrect framerate being used, but it could also be a host of other issues. If you try to create a new project, what happens? If the new project has problems you've done something or installed something that caused a conflict. If it works fine than your project file has most likely been corrupted.

hmm this may have nothing to do with your problem but it's an idea.
I've found when I've installed or used a plug-in for an effect that is stuffed the project file doesn't open and crashes while loading... genart sapphire and firschult are the primary culprit for me.
the only way to then open my project is to uninstall/delete the plug-ins (you get "media offline errors but they are easy fixed by deleting the effect off all clips)
or you might have installed a new set of codecs (amvappbeta3.0?) which are confilcting with whats currently being used by the programs... in which case go back to your old codecs untill you finish the project.
anyway that my 2 bobs worth.

Whenever I open up a new project file with premiere elements it works fine, as well as if i work on a different project than that one. Also, when i tried that project file on a different computer it seemed to work fine minus the footage not being there. Also, concerning the framerate problem, Premiere Elements absolutely refuses me to change the settings no matter how many new projects I open or how many boxes and drop down menus I try to check, uncheck, or change. Should I reinstall the program and see if I did something wrong in the installation process?BasharOfTheAges wrote:As contrary to your thought process as this may seem, "it's been working for a month so it can't be the problem" is a logical error when it comes to working with these things - hell, even editing with XviD fan subs will sometimes work for a while before crapping out and corrupting the project file.

Also, I haven't installed any new codecs, but I have windows vista and around 8 hours before the file stopped working vista did one of its "automatic updates." I don't know how this would effect one single video file, but last time it did one of these "updates" Audacity refused to open for me ever again (I had to download the beta for the new version). Could this possibly have something to do with it? If this is the problem, I'm kind of screwed because the earliest system restore point on my computer is a day after this problem began -_-'. Any help is greatly appreciated, because I really need to start a new contest AMV right away if it looks like this isn't going to work. Thank you!

Okay, wierd.... The file all of a sudden works again. I guess the AMV gods were smiling down at me, because now the file suddenly magically works again perfectly. Talk about deus ex machina... Anyway, I'm just going to cross my fingers and export the file every so often as a backup, thank you so much everyone who helped me with my problem. I hugely appreciate it! ^_^
