Premiere Pro 2 vs. Premiere CS3 - Recommendation?
Does Adobe Premiere CS3 have any advantages over Pro 2? I'm deciding between which one to get and normally I'd always get the newest version, but I heard that CS3 has many bugs where it crashes. Is this true?
I'm used to the old Adobe Premiere 3 so on a side note, less in terms of opinion, technically, would Sony Vegas 8 be faster to make AMVs for in terms of panning and zooming, etc? I'm used to how it is in Premiere so maybe it wouldn't matter to me in that case? Finally, even though it's really old, many people use Premiere 6. Might that be something that would suit me better? I don't really mind Pro or CS3 as long as the way things are done aren't too different. What'd you experienced pros recommend? Thanks in advance...

I can't tell you the difference between CS3 and anything else. I've never used anything but CS3. And I'm hardly an "experienced pro," so take what I say with a grain of salt.
CS3 has been very stable for me, when working with everything that comes built-in. (APP, After Effects integration, Photoshop integration).
It became extremely unstable when I was using AviSynth sources in it, and it writes no index entries to the .avi files it exports. (Haali media splitter reminds me of this everytime I open one of APP's renders.) Additionally, it doesn't always play nice with compression codecs when exporting.
So APP CS3 has its problems, but it isn't as bad as I've read. To avoid the crashing introduced by AviSynth sources, I compress all my sources to Lagarith. And to avoid the bugginess with exports/renders, I export as uncompressed, then use VirtualDub to write a new "direct stream copy" file such that MeGUI can read it without the warning from Haali.
What it boils down to is that you need a lot of harddrive space in order to harness APP CS3. If you have space for uncompressed output and lagarith/huffy input, APP CS3 shouldn't ever crash on you.

For my own interest's sake, do you care to elaborate? Aside from stating your opinion (I want to emphasize: your opinion is extremely subjective), you really don't give much information here... What, specifically, failed to impress you that Premiere 6.0 did better? How does your post different from someone else saying "Downgraded to 6.0 for a bit. Not Impressed. Went back to Premiere Pro CS3." ?requiett wrote:Used CS3 for a bit. Not impressed. Went back to Premiere 6.0.
The OP is looking for insight into his own preferences. He knows what he likes, and is looking for specifics about the programs. He's not just running a tally of which versions people use...

Adobe Premiere CS3 since:
- People from pretty much all over the world tend to agree that it crashes a hell lot less
- Seems to have a working 23.976 timeline (Premiere Pro CS2 has a buggy 23.98 timeline instead, AFAIK...)
- I guess something else that doesn't come to my mind right now
Again, it is a matter of tastes. There's a lot of people around that like to stick to 6.x... I just don't know why. I was told that it's easier to use than the pro series, but as much as I am concerned, I find pro more intuitive and powerful...
But in the end the best thing you could do is try a beta of the various premiere versions you're interested in (in this case 2.0 and cs3) and see what fits better your taste.

I always work with a combination of Premiere Pro and AE 7.0. Well I don´t see a real reason to switch from Pro 1.5 to CS3.
I use both programs for theire reaso to be:
Pro: Editing
AE: Advanced effects
That´s it and for editing alone 1.5 makes a better job for me than CS3, wich I had a trial at home. Why?
-1.5 was more stabel for me
and now the subjectiv reasons:
-The icons of CS3 project files look like SHIT! Come on Adobe! What happend to the horse-icon of Pro 1.5, the fancy feature-icon from Photoshop CS2 and the shape-icon of After Effects CS3? Is there any fucking reason to drop these damn cool icons for ugly bullshit? I don´t think so =/
-Design from Pro CS3
Hell. I associate my AE 7.0 with this design, not Premiere Pro. I dig much more the old one of 1.5
So you see: Beside the "1.5 is more stabel for me", there is no real reason against CS3.
To 6.0 (Premiere 6.0 was before Premiere Pro 1.5 btw):
Even more stabel than 1.5
Stuff like: Unchecking "Full blended frames for speed change" for more than one clip at one time. Why do I have to do it for every clip in my 1.5 ?

Doesn't CTRL+A-ing the timeline allow you to do it all at once?
I'm currently using PP2.0 and it's alright. Not many crashes if you don't have too many avs files in your project, which is easily solved by putting more episodes together. The included flv encoder is a nice feature (not for AMVs, but for stuff like putting a tiny 15 sec video on a website I manage), but I definitely could live without it.
But I still prefer 6.5 (never used 6.0). It was simpler, felt more intuitive, was lighter on the system and barely ever crashed. 2.0 is flashier, but doesn't add much.
Strike that: doing motion in pixels is a huge improvement.
The only reason I switched is because I got a new computer with XP64 preinstalled, which for some reason prevents 6.5 from installing. I looked high and low for a solution, but it seems like it's a known problem that Adobe doesn't bother fixing since they don't support that version anymore.
PP2.0 isn't bad. But I'm not sure it's worth the extra money if you don't have a system like mine and can find a copy of 6.5. Same for CS3, I guess, compared to the previous versions.

Well, ok, but how about this. I'm mainly looking for which program, out of 6, Pro, and CS3 versions is the fastest in terms fo simple effects and screen shakes, etc... Is it basically the same speed? If I wanted to make an AMV with many transitions etc... Which would be the fastest way to go? I don't want to waste more time for the same result. Additionally, obviously, CS3 has much more effects right?Bauzi wrote:I always work with a combination of Premiere Pro and AE 7.0. Well I don´t see a real reason to switch from Pro 1.5 to CS3.
