Use DirectShowSource instead of AVISource. VfW is evil and DirectShow is good. If you want an explanation on that, Zero1 will probably pop up like magic and write a few pages about it (which is good because I really don't know why myself).

No, you're not supposed to be able to play the losslessly compressed file unless you have a very, VERY good computer. The bitrate is just too large, and frame skips and crashes are to be expected. Depending on the contents of the file, it can be played... Hell, even uncompressed RGB can be played, but the more complex it is, the more it humps your hardware.

Of course it does, but it´s not stable or correct (most of the time not fluent), but it should play and not crash.
I´ve a CPU with not as good hardware and it also plays in Premiere.
Hell I render in Lag to preview it in Premiere Pro and it works fine.

It should play and not simply crash. That´s what my experience say.

I think you should think after the project about a new set up of your system.
It helps with wonders!

Ok, well, I feel like an idiot because I was able to fix the "why is my video saying it's 5 minutes long" question I was going to ask. I won't get into detail about that... :P

Anyways, got a decent export through Huffyuv, since Lagarith seems to hate me (yes, it's the newest version, 1.3.12). It still has some flashing junk at the top, and the video seems to like to de-sync with the music, but it plays and doesn't crash so I feel that's a step in the right direction. If I click on the bar in WMV, it'll jump to a scene with the right music sync, but it starts to snowball out of control. Is this typical because the file is enormous or should I be worried?

Also, I've been checking "Deinterlace Video Footage" in APE3 when I do exports. So far I haven't had any random VDM crashes when using it, but I don't know what is behind that. Do I still need to try to deinterlace through AVS or does the export option in APE3 really take care of that?

As for a new computer, here's my specs...

AMD64 3500+
Abit AN8-SLi
4x1gb Corsair XMS DDR400
1.050 Tb HDD space (2x400gb SATAs in Raid 0 and my old 250gb ATA)
Radeon x1800 XL

PS- Thank you guys so much for helping this noob out. I'm trying to get to a point where I can just crank AMVs out with no problems so I don't have to post "help me" threads.

Have you tried to export "Uncompressed"? The file will become really huge but normally there should occur no such described problems.
I only export Uncompressed myself to avoid such trouble.

Tried Uncompressed, got a huge file (5 gigs) that I couldn't do anything with. VDM couldn't load it, WMV couldn't play it. I uninstalled and reinstalled VDM, and no change, so I'm done.

I'm just going to start from scratch, and follow the guide from beginning to end... though there's not a lot of support for APE3 in the guide. I'll just have to wing-it unless someone can share some insight as to original settings/checks/fields/etc. This has been more trouble than just starting over, and I'm just basically done with trying to make this work.

/sigh

Anyways, thanks everyone for the help, and I'll post a response if/when I get it working/have another problem. :?

Well, I found out a little of what was going on, I think.

I was ripping clips through WMV using Fraps (DVDs of the anime aren't available in my area, or at least I can't find them on Amazon or anything) at the frame rate I was using for my WoW videos (60 fps). Even though the clips read 60 FPS in AVIFramerate, over 80% of the original files are 23.976 fps over the rest being 29.97. Apparently, and this is what I'm guessing, when the player reached a 23.976 area in the exported file, it didn't export right and fubar'd (or the other way around... either way it was messed).

So I swapped-out the parts that were 29.97 for 23.976 so now everything is uniform, and re-exported at that with Huffyuv. File is awesome, but I'm getting rainbow-colored bars at the top of the screen. I'm going to try Lagarith with the new edit and see if it's any better.

Although now I feel like an idiot.

If you can do without the part that's rainbowed, you can always just crop it off.
