Admittedly this is more of an image question than a Photoshop question, however that is the software I'll be using to do it, so I figured this place was the best to post.
How do I get my image to be blank in some spaces? I know thats a terrible way to ask a question and it is poorly worded so I'll do my best to explain it properly.
The best example I could cite would be Minions icon, where its just his round beach ball of death thing and thats it. You can see the background of the a-m-v.org website behind different areas of the image. So how do I do something like that in photoshop?

If I understand you correctly,you want to have object and a transparent background (because that's what his avatar most likely is).. That's a simple thing.
For avatar :
1. Create new Image in Photoshop. Settings :
Width : 100 (pixels)
Height : 100 (pixels)
Resolution : 72,009 (pixels/inch)
Color Mode : RGB Color (8 bit)
Background Contents : Transparent
2. Resize picture you want to use just the way object you want would fit in.
3. Cut out your object (same as masking - cut the background out)
4. Save as... | .PNG format |
For other pictures (like wallpaper making or other stuff) just use Width and Height settings you want and it should do the trick.
For avatar :
