Try doing this first: go to Tools > Options. On the Compatibility tab, scroll down and uncheck any instance of ffdshow that may appear. Then click OK (you may have to restart WMM to have this take effect).
You may also want to disable ffdshow from handling any type of file that you already have an installed codec for (Start > ffdshow > Audio (Video) decoder configuration). Examples: audio = WMA, MP1/2/3, etc., video = XviD, DivX, WMV, MPEG1/2, etc. Basically, disable everything except the few items that you need ffdshow to handle (H.264, and well, not much else). Don't forget to change the VfW codec configuration also.
