Adobe After Effects - Whats The Best Format To Use?

Post by Dizmo » Wed Aug 12, 2009 9:24 pm

What format should I render with AE that is really good for editing?

I'm thinking lagarith, but I've never seen the option available. I've already installed the codecs for yuv and lagarith but none is avail.

Also, whats a very decent compressed format to use?

I want to edit some parts of my video clip, like for example the clip is 20 seconds long and I want to add an effect inbetween, between 10 to 15 second margin. Should I edit the whole 20 second long clip or chop out that part and just edit that?

I use lagarith, I've heard that gives some people problems though, so if it doesn't work HuffYUV is the next best thing.

Yeah but from my first post:

Like, I know how to create lagarith files and in vegas I'm able to export my file out and into AE as lagarith but how do you make AE render it in lagarith so I can put it back into my editing program?

Oh yeah, sorry for the mass posts, I post as I think of it.

Anyhow, in Render Que, how do I erase the renders before and how do I rerender something? After I render the project, the blue link that asks me to choose location and settings no longer is there...

set the work area bar , [n] around the area you want to export.

hit [ctrl+m] or [ctrl+shift+/] to send the work area to the render queue.

click the text next to where it says output module, if you want to use laggy, set format to 'video for windows', click 'format options' and select 'lagarith' from the compressor box.

to remove something from the queue, just select it and press delete.
to reactivate a cancelled job, tick the checkbox on the left.
if a job went through but you want to run it again, select it and press [ctrl+d] to duplicate the job with the same settings as before.

i would suggest you render image sequences out of ae. you can presumably import these into vegas and can quickly convert them to footage if you like. you can also resume rendering after a crash, and pick out bad frames/glitches should you need to.

What format should I use for pictures and how many frames per second should I get?

Also, is it normal for video to be laggy if you put png picture file ontop of your footage? Happens to me.

i don't understand, do you mean in vegas? if so you probably need to render your work/preview area.

tga or png would be a safe bet.

you should avoid changing the fps wherever possible. the fps of your comps (ae), sequences (vegas) and renders (everything) should all be the same unless you're trying to create an over/undercranking effect.
