Ever since the applause meter disappeared, there's no major reason for the audiences to cheer or express enthusiasm over their favorite videos. After each video that played, there was little more than the obligatory polite applause and that was it. It SUCKED ASS. Where's the energy and enthusiasm in that? A mere trinket is no substitute. Sure, it'd be nice, but it has roughly the same enthusiasm as getting a good report card. Well done, go celebrate with a beer, then go do it again. It's not quite the same.
What the hell kind of crowds do you guys draw over at AX that you need an applause meter to get people to express any major enthusiasm for the videos they liked?

What i had noticed at AX02 was that it didn't really matter how loud the audience at the back of the room was, if the front row was loud, the meter would show that. I don't really think that's an accurate representation of how well done a video is.

I'll agree that audience reaction is great, but i think the meter will give off false readings:.

1) Like i said before, if the meter is on the stage (like it was at AX02) then the meter is only going to represent the front row and not the back of the room. You could have a handful of fangirl in the front row make more noise then the audience as a whole. So a video can win even though more then half the audience didn't cheer for it.

2) Fans like to cheer for their favorite anime, music, and even editors. Fanime06 was a huge example of this. At the end of that contest i was so pissed because the audience cheered for videos that IMO sucked ass. Those video used anime that were very popular while videos that didn't use popular shows were much more well done. The only saving grace for that contest was the the audience voted for the right videos. The videos that were GOOD won while the ones that got the most applause didn't. So just because the audience cheers loud for one video doesn't mean that video is good or deserves to win.

What was wrong with the setup since 2003? I thought the audience's reaction to the videos shown was fine. It's just that the videos sucked, so why cheer for shitty videos?

Good question. But every audience since 2003 has sounded like they've been on thorazine. Comedy usually got at least a few cheers (after a good laugh, it's not hard to whoop out a few), but reaction for even the best videos in Drama and AMTV were usually sedate.

Some of my favorite videos are from 2003. At the least, it beat the crap out of 2004.

I thought the crowd cheering during 2003-2006 was fine. There were obviously more screams for the videos they liked so yeah.

So... how bout them finalists?

They're probably coming real soon. He's got to have them by now because the staff judging for the videos is in a few days, so they're probably just being held up in order to go through a PR release [rolls eyes] for maximum fanfare. It's out of James' hands, so I recommend not pestering him about it.

And before anyone asks, no, I will not announce the finalists if they hadn't been announced by then. Trumping a PR release is a con-ban (not just a staff-ban) offense. I don't think I'll be going anyway because it conflicts with my work schedule.

I TOTALLY agree in your statement Pwolf. I basically said the same thing on the AX forums.

Fangirls who see a naruto video matching a Linkin Park song will scream and go absolutely CRAZY. Thus tripping the decibel meter completely inaccurate.

A decibel meter measures sound BY direction. ANYONE to have taken high school physics will know that the decibel meter is an inaccurate way of judging.

The main problem....

No awards cerimony. I really don't understand why can't they show it on the intermission of the masq.
Oh god, that black dude with the afro is always making those damn trash ass music hip hop amvs...he needs to do something with techno or rock....
.......as if I would do something like that.

Because they've got other activities that they show during intermission, like that Kung Fu group or something of that sort. Plus there's always the conspiracy theory of it being another tactic to bury AMV, if you're of that mindset.
