There is discussion of an a-m-v.org dinner at Otakon and since this thread is a bit more active than the one in the Conventions section, I'd hope some of you get the notice. I think it'd be great to see all of the contestants, fans, etc. get together for it.

Yes, I attended. Thing is, as I said before, unless a video was REALLY..."special", I didn't really feel the need to comment. I don't really remember most of the videos off the top of my head to be honest or who made what. It's just my overall impression that I got from the event and that's that I think it will definitely be a great year for several categories. I kinda sorta wonder if I should have gone to the pre-screening at all because how things could turn out. 2 hours of awesomness for the first time is a bit different than getting it here and there over an 8 hour period, you know?

Do any of you that go to the pre-screening then the finals feel like you would have enjoyed the finals even better if you saw those videos the first time? This is my first pre-screening, so I won't really know until I'm there at the con myself.

Hehe. I am being a lazy and cheap bum and using my cosplay from katsu. I am such a bum compared to my friends who have some sickeningly amazing costumes. But considering I was working on my vid I kinda didn't have much time to do much else and my summer has been really busy. And all I really wanna do now is learn my new adobe premeiere while making a new vid

A dinner, you say? That would be pretty cool. It would be awesome to meet the competition. From the AMV's I've seen, it seems we're in for a wild year.

In short, don't be discouraged and even if you don't get in...still don't be discouraged. The con is good times.
You are correct on both accounts!

I fully agree that being "unseasoned" does NOT equal "untalented" by any means. But I also see how the experience of having a few videos under your belt helps. I look back at the first vid I submitted to Otakon (my first vid, period) and it was FF7: Advent Children, 16:9, and I didn't do anything to correct the aspect ratio. So I submitted this stretched and un-letterboxed vid...whoops! Yet I still made it into the contest---so don't give up hope!!

And Dwchang is right---if you don't get in, don't be discouraged. Enjoy the contest and see what videos you like and why, and keep that in mind the next time you start editing.
Well honestly (and I don't mean for this to come across the wrong way), I've kept both of your videos and I *rarely* keep AMVs lately. I'm a very harsh critic and even with your 'problems' in aspect ratio, the editing still shines through enough that I enjoyed it and kept it. I usually just delete things. I will admit that the music really helps in that video's case though. I find myself playing your AMV on my 2nd monitor while I'm in my research lab doing work.

I'd say something about your entry this year, but I suppose I can just do that in person. Suffice to say you've improved and seem to do different things year-to-year.

And yes, there's no need to be discouraged by any of this. In the big scheme of things, it's just an AMV contest. It's meant to be *fun*.
Ryvannis wrote:135 entries? AX had about 135 entries in this year, so in terms of how big the competition is it's pretty much the same.
I'm sure Vic won't like me knocking Otakon this year, but every year since 2003 has been a 'down year.' That was the 'pinnacle' of the contest with nearly 200 entries. I believe next to AWA that might be the single largest amount of entries in a contest and no surprise, it was the most competitive and contest I enjoyed watching the most.

Then again, I'm very harsh on AX and think they have some serious issues (both in the contest and the actual con). That's for another thread though...
AtomX wrote:There's kind of a problem with the Sentimental category though. It's coupled with Romance. Now, this isn't ALWAYS the case, but more often than not, when the audience views this category, they will typically vote for the best romance video. Quite honestly a good number of them probably don't really know what sentimental really means. So yeah, it's always a tough sell for sentimental videos in that category.
I'd have to agree (how could I not having benefited from this bias), but as I pointed out at the pre-screening, pure Sentimental videos *have* won before, but they had to be pretty damn good. Case in point, Vlad's Memorie's Dance. So in short, it is possible...just gotta do a damn good job ;).

Anyway good luck to everyone. I like my entry a lot this year, but have a feeling it's not audience friendly so...we'll see what happens tomorrow.

Out of curiosity...I picked a video game to do this year. Are those usually looked down upon? Do voters prefer to see anime?
