Honestly, I don't think ading TF or Terminator would have really added to your video. IMO it would have taken away more from it. The Mac jokes and the like I think were better because they were much more subtle and required specific knowhow to find it funny. At least the area the editors were seated in got the joke from my observations.

That said, adding either of those two I think would have increased audience response for the video and possibly increased your chances of winning since adding familiar things or popular things instantly boosts your hances as far as the audience is concerned. For years I've wanted to make a pandering video just to prove that point but I just never could get into the idea as everytime I consider it I just label it as stupid and petty.

Yes that is what i was getting at. It wouldn't have made the video any more funnier, but adding TF or Terminator that would've increased audience response for sure.
I didn't want to though, i thought it would get DQed immediately for using that kind of stuff.
I wouldn't want the MPAA busting in and shutting us down for it :( again i thought it was risky.

Well, making a good fan pandering video I found is not as easy as it seems.... I've seem almost all the good comedy videos as I ran then in AMV rooms over the years and you'd be surprised how hard it actually is to make the audience really laugh hard! Most comedies end up having a real funny idea that gets old very fast as the video ends up too long...

I would never seem myself ever making anything remotely funny a few years ago and I really never thought my video would win anything as I thought it was not that funny (kind of more parody)... Actually, it surprised me even more that creators like it just as much :?

Last year ironically my video the Audition was much more funnier but a lot of creators hated it... :? Just goes to show how confusing it is to actually make a real good video that still is funny... :?

BTW, I did get all your Mac jokes (hey, I use to have a Mac+!). However, I think the audience tends to want to see silly stuff on the screen and react fast to it... Although if you overdo it, it turns out to have laughter, but not win you anything (so you might be right about that part)... I not sure if I'll ever figure out what exactly makes the audience choose what they do as a whole :? Wonder if the Death Note video was in Comedy if it would of actually won and if so if would of been on the few comedy elements or the fact someone did something funny with Death Note

MisterFurious wrote:You bring up another point, though. AX is a little out-of-date when it comes to categories. Just the basic three plus "Pro", which to me equates to "upbeat dance videos with tons of effects". Rider's was the only one that stood out in that category because it had a story and a visual theme. All I remember of the rest of the entries were technology demos that made my head hurt (or was it the sound?).

Perhaps if "Pro" were changed to "Upbeat", then the emphasis would be less on "make your video look as effects-laden as possible" to "tell an upbeat story that wouldn't necessarily make it into Drama because it's not angsty or romantic enough." There can always be a technical award added for the one video in any category with the best eye candy.
i've been wanting an upbeat category for ax for a while, but i do have mixed emotions on using it to replace the AmTV/Pro category. granted it's only been called "Pro" for two years, it's still been the category where highly skilled creators placed there stuff. and mixing them in with other categories would obviously give them an arguably unfair advantage...
HOWEVER, i've noticed (these last two years in particular) that there have been videos placed in the other 3 categories that were as refined and polished as Pro finalists. so why shouldn't the special effects videos keep their advantage? they obviously deserve it for all the effort and skill they put into them.

the other alternative would be to add an extra category, and if necessary cut down the max # of finalists for each category *ducks*

Well, I did see 6000+ humans at a contest screening at a certain con :P And they did vote for comedy, so they must be human :book:
AMV filled close to capacity this year. It even beat out Masquerade, shockingly enough.

It didn't. Section D was conspicuously empty during the AMV contest. It was full during Masquerade, and the rest of the audience was full, too. I had a great vantage point, after all...

I still prefer AMV's, though.
