This is probably a little late/petty but can i say your entire argument is invalid because you said twice that the video uses music from the Lord of the Rings trailer, when the music is actually from the Requiem for a Dream OST? You even pointed out that it was a rip of lord of the rings, and unless im mistaken requiem for a dream has to do with drugs, not wizards and fantasy. :-pmilkmandan wrote: Here is a great example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tS-gd9eT30
Lord of the Rings Trailer music to Totoro. The video was made not to MOCK the original but to make something NEW.

Rapter79 wrote:You need to elaborate on this heavily, because I've seen videos in the finals that have some pretty awful video quality. Tends to be more common in comedy than any other category (also Fun/OVA this year) But i don't think that they should be DQ'd because of it, but there is obviously needs to be a minimum standard, but how does one define a video quality and have it as a measurable quantity?Radical_Yue wrote: Audio/Video Quality
Like I said, I was just listing those from memory. I'm not 100% sure if they're correct or what aspects they're looking at when judging.

I agree. While technical merit does count, that's not entirely what this contest is about.Rapter79 wrote:This is where i have an issue with the AMV contest in general, Is it supposed to be the final product or the editing only involved? Because there are a ton of great videos that involve minimal edits or pure straight-cuts (or even 0-edit films) that stop the hell out of fast action-cuts and effects everywhere but no story told. This comes down to the "what makes an AMV good and place as a finalist" which i think is a big thing that's unknown to the audience as well as a lot of contestants.
Some will argue with me on this, but the bottom line is to make something entertaining. There were vids entered that were technically impressive but were boring as hell, and then there were vids that had simple cuts but were thoroughly entertaining.

Not that I've actually watched this video, but "Requiem for a Tower" is the popular name for a remix of Clint Mansell's "Lux Aeterna" that was actually used as trailer music for LotR: The Two Towers (the original was for Requiem for a Dream). Then it would make sense to use an edited song so if you weren't great at sound editing that you wouldn't have to edit a 7 min long AMV. Seems more than reasonable to me.Scintilla wrote:Not that I've actually watched this video, but "Requiem for a Tower" is the popular name for a remix of Clint Mansell's "Lux Aeterna" that was actually used as trailer music for LotR: The Two Towers (the original was for Requiem for a Dream). Exactly, and that's, to a degree, what the point I was trying to make earlier. Once you can put editing and bias aside, you look at execution and what you get out of the video. If the video is well edited but bores you to death, it doesn't mean the video is bad. It's just boring to you. This is where the varying opinions comes into play and why I said a judging pool should consist of different opinions because one video that might be boring to one person but might be visual pleasing to another. Has nothing to do with how well the video was edited. But in the same sense, to be fair, editing should be considered very important non-the-less. Otherwise you get videos that might be entertaining but are also just the opening to an anime set to different music.xstylus wrote: Some will argue with me on this, but the bottom line is to make something entertaining. That just leads to catering to your audience, which i have a problem with many times.
There are reasons major blockbusters typically don't win academy awards, even though they please the fans. The question is, what is the purpose of the AMV contest, and what makes a good AMV need to be more widely adopted and known.

I forgot to add that while, yes, AMV contests are meant to entertain those who attend the con, it's also a contest. Those who participate want to be judged based on their skills and abilities not based on which video is more entertaining. If you were to show only the most, subjectively, entertaining videos that were submitted, mind as well just drop the contest part of the contest and just show videos. You have to find the balance between putting on a fair contest and giving the audience the best show you can.
