I mean how many of the unquailfied ones were trailer or other categories that they've won at other cons that didn't get placed at Otakon this year?

Spoiler :
I mean... anything is possible I guess, so we'll see what happens tomorrow, but my video has 30 seconds of drama tops. Like that might have actually been the worst category to move to. I can't say I don't feel a little set up to fail here.
I do like the mild CCS/Frozen theming in Drama though, lol.

It's possible funding only allowed so many awards this year. Otakon almost went under cuz covid.

As Yuusharo mentioned on Twitter, there was a low turnout in terms of those two and Comedy, and while some Upbeat videos would also work in Comedy to give it a decent amount, others were moved to other categories that would come close to fitting.
I can see with what you're saying, as I originally entered my video into Upbeat (as, while it would also work in Comedy, the humor in my video consists of elements that average con-goers may not get such as puns and meme references). Personally, I think the reason Upbeat got the shaft instead of Comedy is because for years, the three main classifications for videos in AMV Contests were Drama, Action, and Comedy.AllyKatAVR wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 11:36 amDid...upbeat really need to be omitted? I count at least 5 of them and that would have certainly made a good sized category.

I remember Vic stating in past years that a video will make Otakon's finals if it scores above the cutoff, regardless of how the rest of its category did. If that's still true (I have no reason to believe it isn't), then it would just mean that there weren't enough finalists in the Trailer/Parody and Upbeat/Rhythm categories to justify awards for them, so the ones that did break had to be moved to other categories.SilkAMV wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 9:41 amYeah, yours probably would have made it if there was still a category for it. There's a trailer in the action category, but that's the only trailer finalist I can spot.Zeonic Freak wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 8:37 amAh the submission I did is more a trailer so that would explain why I wasn't a finalist, perhaps.

Interesting... So is there a minimum and/or maximum number of finalists?Scintilla wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 10:19 pmI remember Vic stating in past years that a video will make Otakon's finals if it scores above the cutoff, regardless of how the rest of its category did. I believe that depends on the videos' run times, on how many can be fit into two hours after accounting for the interstitials etc. So if e.g. a lot of really good videos are on the long side, then the total number of finalists would need to be lower than usual to keep everything within the allotted time.Rider4Z wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 10:46 pmInteresting... Edit: Unless you meant min/max # within each category. In that case, I don't know about Vic's minimum (I think I've done a three-video category twice, but one of those was Comedy (which you can't omit without risking a riot and/or walkout) and one was Artistic with three videos that would not have worked right anywhere else), but I suspect there is no maximum; I don't remember ever having seen one of Vic's contests add a category after the judging that didn't explicitly exist on the entry form, or split a category into two. The lead time on ordering the trophies might make this impossible (it's easier at AnimeNEXT where the medals don't include the category and we can print up the certificates ourselves). Somebody please correct me if my memory is wrong.
