Here are my annual troll reviews. All are goofy ass quotes from Dracula Flow that I thought best matched the video. Not meant to be taken seriously. None of the quotes are supposed to be insulting the quality of the video itself. Very strong dialogue warning. If you aren't on here, that means I already made one on Kollaborate. If you dont know who Dracula Flow is, well here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmtDZPyaVpc
Spoiler :

So these pics could mean a various number of things. They could be how the video made me feel, an element that matches the video or a pun on the name. If the gif doesn't make any sense at all it's possible i just saw it and wanted to put it somewhere. Anyway, cowabunga!

Following my tradition from last year where I did bear reviews to parallel with my bear video in 2022, this year I'm doing Inside Out emotions to parallel my Inside Out video from 2023. Some of these accurately reflect my real feelings, but other video reactions are just entertaining to me.

Re: Obligatory, annual AWA 2024 Accy reviews!
Post by SynaesthesiaVideos » Wed Nov 20, 2024 10:29 pm
This year I'm experimenting with how I best review every video in this contest.
I've never been good at expressing myself with words.. at least not as succinctly as I want to be. I've always been the kind of person that is driven by emotions, rather than analytics. In the past I've tried being less emotional and more analytical with my video reviews.. which I've come to realize is futile and not a good representation of myself as a fellow editor.
So with that being said, here are my reviews of this year's Accolades contest!!
PLEASE READ BELOW BEFORE READING MY REVIEWS
(+) #01 'A Five Minute AMV?That's too Short' - Frieren Probably
I could already tell by the video title that I was gonna like this one. I’ve seen quite a few Frieren amvs that are soft and sentimental, but this is my favorite one so far. It just FEELS so right. I think its a combination of your very subtle cuts and overlays, and your non-linear storytelling thats still emotionally intelligible with the music and the lyrics. I’ve watched the anime (multiple times) so being familiar with its characters and story really makes me feel very nostalgic.. But I believe this vid could still resonate with someone who hasn’t watched Frieren with its pitch-perfect scene selection and timing!
1:55 how did you make this blur effect??
(?) #02 After Andy
This has really good storytelling, and feels like a great tribute to Toy Story! But what keeps this from hitting with me is in the timing of the cuts and the flow, which to me seems like it was mainly synced with the lyrics. I think if the pacing in the beginning was slower and mirrored the slow piano that intros the song I would've enjoyed it more... but thats more of an editing preference so I can’t really call valid critique of any kind. For what it is I think you made a fantastic video!
(+) #03 All Aboard
I’m a huge fan of Studio Ghibli.. I consider Miyazaki a master auteur and a personal hero.. so you could say I’m already down for a pan-Ghibli AMV! Can all agree that Ghibli films all have a VIBE? Its not an easy one to describe with words, but this song choice with your mix of old and new Ghibli films with fantastic match cuts really nails that vibe. I really like the assortment of movies you chose to use, don’t know if you used ALL but it feels like you did! But it gave me this low-burning warmth in my stomach that reminds me that things will be OK, or just how I feel after watching a Ghibli movie!
(+) #04 Always Intense
I’d never heard this song or of this movie before watching this video. If I didn’t know any better I’d assume this was a professionally edited ad for the movie! I know the song came out years after the movie but it feels like it could’ve been an insert song on the OST. If anything, this got me interested in watching Repo Man!
(?) #05 Angel may cry
This is an intensely edited AMV! When the beat drops and the action sync hits I’m hyped! What kinda misses for me is that the intensity in the editing kinda starts out too high. I feel like all the fast cuts at the beginning doesn’t really match with the music, which I feel would need much longer cuts and cross-fades. That would really make those more hype parts with the louder music hit harder!
(+) #06 Astringent Aftertaste
These two were probably my fav characters in all of Chainsaw Man.
Your storytelling in this vid is VERY strong. I felt like I was reliving their whole story in the show, in less than 3 minutes! I love how you chose to transition to the ED scenes during the song’s chorus.. it really emphasizes the drastic change in vibe and adds so much character and color to the storytelling! The burn transitions were also a nice touch.
This was one of my picks for BiS. I feel like you went for a specific concept and absolutely nailed the execution! I don’t even like this song that much lol, but I love watching this video!
(+) #07 Astrophotographer boy and his girl
I think the song choice is the main reason I enjoy watching this video.. because I fucking love that song! It also really fits the style of the anime! However, on a purely editing side of things I have a few nitpicks. For instance the lip-flap, although not gratuitous, it does feel a little distracting. Depending on what you edit with its an easy fix! As long as your software has basic masking capabilities you should be able to take out most of the lip-flap. Also I feel like where the music really starts picking up there should be faster cuts that sync with the beats. Again, this these are all my own nitpicks, so don’t really take them too seriously as critique. You probably have your own editing preferences so you might not even agree with me! Either way I think you’ve made a really cute and enjoyable video thats real easy to vibe to!
(+) #08 Bandai be like
LOL I love this concept XD
perfect choice in anime sources too!
(+) #09 Basically a googly eyed loser
First off, EEAAO was my FAVORITE live-action movie released in 2022, so seeing we had an edit in accolades made me very happy! I love how you focused on the mom-daughter-husband relationship theme, the song really fits the teenage-middle aged angst! I’ve never heard this song before but this feels like it could be the official video! I like a lot of the sync choices you made, especially this sync with the glass breaking at 2:31
As a fan of the movie I feel like this really gets what the whole vibe is about!
(+) #10 Bigger on the inside
I thought I had seen all the possible videos that could be made with this song.. until I watched this one. I love how this video takes itself so seriously yet has some genuinely funny moments XD The pacing and storytelling is also top-notch. And I love that ending LOL
I feel like this could be enjoyable not just for the Anya fans, but for anyone that appreciates a well-crafted AMV!
(+) #11 BLOOD4
Picking an old and obscure video source like Rock & Rule really made this stand out! The song choice feels perfect for the dark but cheesy 80s vibes of film. The lip-sync doesn’t match up perfectly but its not enough to be distracting. Solid sync all around!
(?) #12 Bluey Happy
I’m a parent and I still haven’t watched Bluey.. thats on me.
I feel like this video was edited for someone who’s already a fan of the show, so I might not be the target audience (yet) but I get the impression from your video that this is a fun and emotional show! What keeps this from hitting with me is partly to the editing choice to use cross fades for almost every cut. They kind of clash with the peppy beat and upbeat vibe I’m getting from the music. Also, this might just be a personal taste thing but I feel like the song gets very repetitive in the final minute, and I sort of get numb from all the fast cuts. I feel like if you cut a good chunk off the end of the song to bring the runtime closer to the 3 min mark would improve the overall experience. Either way, I still believe you made a cute and fun AMV!
(-) #13 Buddy in the mirror
It was very hard for me to enjoy this video. It feels like the only thing that was considered when editing this was the storytelling/scene sequence. I’m not getting any consistent music sync, so I’m not getting any sense of flow. It seems like there was an attempt on lip-sync, but again its very inconsistent so its hard to tell if it was intended. At 0:47 the music starts to slowly pick up in tempo until the beat drops at 1:11.. But I didn’t see anything in the edit that would suggest that the pace is picking up.. just some scenes in sequential order with a lot of lip-flap. There’s multiple places in this vid that are like this, but there’s too many to list.
I get that this video’s storytelling would make sense to someone who’s seen the anime, but thats really all they would be getting out of it. It doesn’t feel like a true Music Video.. in the sense that it doesn’t do a good job conveying the music to video form. And as someone who hasn’t watched this anime there really isn’t anything satisfying I can get out of watching it.
(?) #14 Children’s Work
I’ve never seen this show, but the song does seem to fit the vibe you’re going for! I think its the combination of the song not being to my taste, and not having watched the show that keeps me from enjoying this video (regardless of the WIP status)
I do believe you have a really great start to a video! From an editing standpoint I’d say what you have here is a solid storytelling AMV in the making.
(?) #15 Cloaked in silence
The song is definitely the biggest reason I can’t get into this video. Really not a fan of this style of music.. but regardless, this feels like a well-crafted and thought-out AMV! I think the two sources aesthetically fit together pretty well. I haven’t seen either so its hard for me to get a sense of what the video is trying to say, but it feels like this could be enjoyable to anyone a fan of the animes, or the song!
(?) #16 Coming Home
I’ll start by saying I’ve never watched One Piece.
I get the sense that this is supposed to be a character profile for the main characters, so fans of the show will surely get some nostalgic feels from this video! I, however, have no idea what these characters have gone through! I have no doubt they all have some real epic moments, and I do get the sense that whoever edited this put a lot of thought into it, because even I can tell that your editing and effective music sync is super effective! (note: I do plan on watching One Piece!)
(?) #17 Community
I think this song is a great choice for the anime, and what you’ve edited so far has really nice flow and feels very cohesive! Personally, I’m not a fan of this music so its hard for me to really get into it, but I can see the passion in your editing! Now just try to find a creditless version of the OP
(+) #18 Community spirit
I already commented on #03 about how those warm yet complex Ghibli vibes are hard to get right.. but this vid totally gets it! I love that you used a lesser-known film in the Ghibli catalog, and this song was an excellent choice for the vibe! I could be mad that the video is too short, but I like how the brevity leaves this feeling of just witnessing a happy fleeting moment that you want to get back
(+) #19 Crisis of ‘87
First thing that came to mind when watching this was “did my BGC vid from two years ago inspire this video??”
Its totally possible you have no idea what vid I’m talking about, but yours feels like the exact kind of vibe I was going for in my Knight Saber City vid. I don’t believe this was intended to copy, because it definitely has a much different narrative from mine. I love how you were able to incorporate so many of the characters from the anime! The song is PERFECT for BGC, and I believe you did both it and the anime justice with your well-thought out pacing and sync. This was one of my BiS selections, and I am actually jealous of this edit XD
(?) #20 Crossing a line
I know the editing in this video is good. The storytelling feels very cohesive and the flow feels organic.. I just have a hard time getting into it mainly for having never watched Loki (or any movie with the character) and generally just not being a fan of the song. Thats ok tho, this vid isn’t for everyone (thats a good thing) and I’m positive this will resonate well with Loki fans!
(+) #21 Crossing the devil’s lane
At first I was slightly turned off by the music, but the beat sync with the visuals kept my attention. I’m glad this was a shorter edit.. any longer and you’d have to tighten up the storytelling and overall theme. Theres a few reused scenes, but they didn’t really bother me at all. I think I just really like Devilman Crybaby too much to not like this video lol
(+) #22 Dangerously sweet
I’ve never seen the anime but I still had a good time with the main couple in this romance video! What puts it over the line into being an enjoyable experience is the close attention to having a tight flow, and the extra bits of effects like the added flavor text at 1:02 (I’m assuming this is non-native)
I may not know who these characters are but you’ve convinced me to root for them
(?) #23 Different joys
This is a real solid concept for a Christmas amv. I like how you picked a bunch of different styles of animation (and puppets!). The Frieren inclusion was an odd choice, but I didn’t even notice it until my 2nd viewing so I guess it kinda does fit lol
I think the biggest obstacle for me is the song choice. Objectively, I don’t think its a bad pick.. but its just not a Christmas song I can get into, personally. In fact- its my firm belief that Mariah Carey’s ‘All I want for Xmas is You’ was the last good Christmas song, and we as a society should just stop making new ones XD
(+) #24 Don’t touch that dial
WEIRD AL. YES.
Shikanoko was such a disappointing show, so I very much agree with the videos’ message XD Luckily your video makes up for all the bad comedic timing the show had, which means it was super fun to watch!
(-) #25 Easy mode
The song is a big reason I can’t get into this video. I know thats a personal taste thing so I won’t say anything else about it.. but from an editing POV I do get a sense of a cohesive video concept with some great lyric sync! I could see this being a great way to get more people watching the anime.
(+) #27 Every anime has a monster
Wow what an out-of-the-box video concept! I never would’ve saw Kikoru as the Crow of Kaiju no. 8 but because of your video I can’t unsee it XD I can tell a lot of thought was put into the scene selection, which really sells this whole thing for me.
(+) #28 Exploitated Emulation
This was my favorite out of all the live-action entries. I really like how this song matches with the movie (which I have seen!) and how you focused on the robots’ POV as the main narrative. The video breezes through the three-and-a-half minute runtime, constantly keeping me engaged with the timely sync and pitch-perfect scene selection! It also helps that I really vibe with the song 8)
(?) #29 Ferris wheel
I don’t have any real critiques for this video. It feels tightly edited and has great storytelling.. I think its just my preference in where to implement Ken Burns zooms, which I feel like they were overused in your edit. If you kept them to a bare-minum during the verses and saved them for the chorus I would’ve felt a greater impact when it got there. Also, I didn’t really feel any sense of transition between the two sections in the editing. But overall, for what it is I’d say you’ve made a real solid and cute romance vid!
(+) #30 Fostering imagination
The storytelling and pacing is very strong with this video! I’ve never seen this movie but I can get a really good sense of the overall narrative. I think what made this an enjoyable watch for me was the subtle use of match cuts, and the strong focus on not just the main girl but all the other side characters! I really want to watch this movie now
(?) #31 Fully dressed
This is a really fun tribute to Joker, and uses all the different iterations in a very clever way! Unfortunately I really don’t like this type of music so its hard for me to enjoy watching it, but I really don’t have any actual critiques.. I can tell this is a smartly edited tribute that would get any fan of the Joker hyped!
(+) #33 Good feeling
First off, this video looks IMMACULATE. The masking, color correction, overlays, digital effects all look professionally edited! I love how creative you got with the different butterfly and sparkly effects! They really accentuate the “good feeling” vibe, and look native to the source. There are times where the lip-sync felt a tad off, but not enough it get distracting. I thoroughly enjoy watching this video! Every time it leaves me in awe :O
(-) #34 Goodbye kiss
There’s a couple reasons why I didn’t enjoy this video, and they’re both just part of my personal taste in music and editing. I’ve never been a fan of country music.. especially this kind of sentimental “love song” type. Objectively, it does seem to fit well with the visuals, and your editing does tell a nice cohesive story, so I can definitely see this working with a lot of viewers.
The other hangup I have is the seemingly overuse of Ken Burns zooms, especially in the softer sections of the song. Theres also parts in the last half where the constant zooms feel inconsistent and out of place, which can be distracting to anyone legitimately enjoying the video.
Still, I think you’ve made a real solid romance video with some creative storytelling choices!
(?) #35 Heading south
I really want to like this, but I think the inclusion of the implied sexual assault makes me not want to rewatch this. I do love me some Spaceghost and Zorak shenanigans tho 8)
(?) #36 Hold my shovel
I’ve seen quite a few JJK vids edited with this kind of music, for this specific type of vibe.. But your simple and clever editing choices really made this an easy watch for someone like me; who’s never watched the show and doesn’t really care for that kind of music. There is a really good sense of flow and you built up all the many fight sequences very satisfyingly! My main criticism is that the multiple overlays that start at 1:37 really clash for me, and become visual over-information. I think you’re on to a good idea here, but I think you might want to play around with the different opacities, or even add blurring to a layer or two?
(+) 37 I am trying to break your heart
I’d never heard of this movie, or this song, before watching your video. If I didn’t know better I would’ve assumed this was the track’s official music video. The song has some subliminal terrifying imagery in the instrumentation (wtf is that piano doing?) and some real melancholy lyrics, so using this b&w art film with adults of various ages in various stages of emotions gives me the slightest hint of unease that makes this a very engaging watch for me. It keeps me at the edge of my seat wondering if this is gonna turn into some kind of horror film.
You’ve edited a very unique video that belongs in its own category of “thriller”
(+) #38 I’m 13 and this is deep
I’m struggling to find words to describe how poignantly beautiful the message is..
But, until then I guess I’ll comment on how perfect this song choice is for Mob, and just how unexpected it is. I’d never heard it before, but it sounds like its from a musical, so it was probably written for a specific part of a specific story.. so picking something like that took a lot of bravery and confidence in one’s editing prowess! The execution of it all feels damn near perfect. When the whole thing built up to that reveal at 1:36 I knew there was something very special about this video, and I was fully engrossed in its narrative.
This was one of my BiS picks (and my top Wildcard pick), and definitely will be a major standout for me this whole year!
(+) #39 Imposter syndrome
This song sounds like it would best fit a romance video, yet with your choice in editing you’ve turned its lyrics around into a self-love video! I really love the sync choices you made too, especially where the guitar starts syncing with the chords at 1:25
I’ll never get tired of Bocchi the Rock videos, especially if y’all keep thinking outside the box like you did to create this video!
(-) #40 Jinx in the machine
I’m sorry. This video was pretty much DOA for me… I’ve never liked Linkin Park (in fact you could say their music was my bane for much of the early 2000s) so I’m already wincing looking at the artist’s name. I don’t know when you finished editing this but there was a LoL official music video released very recently with another new LP track.. so I had a knee-jerk reaction to it and thought that using LoL’s Arcane felt very “unimaginitive” and “easy”.
Now that I’ve thought it over, I concede that it is very likely you got the idea before that music video dropped, so I have rescinded those epithets and will assume that your vid is an original concept!
For what it is your video is fine. You used some of the best scenes from the show and edited a really nice flow.. but it has a lot of very literal lyric sync that feels a little cheesy, and there doesn’t really feel like there’s a cohesive story. That may be intentional on your part, and its very possible you weren’t going for a specific narrative and wanted to keep it more of a vibe-y edit (which I do think you succeeded there!) but the song really isn’t my cup of tea and I just have no desire to keep watching it.
(+) #41 Joke’s on you
Jeez the music and lyric sync is so strong in this video, I could feel every ‘hit’ in the music. I haven’t watched the movie but I can get a really good sense of this character and whats going through his head. I’m not a rap fan at all but this was still an enjoyable watch for me!
(-) #43 Kono subarashii sekai ni bakuresu
Oh no… AJR
Again, this is just a personal taste thing but I cannot stand this artist’s music, so my expectations going into this video are already low. Editing-wise the video starts out feeling like I’m watching a clip show of the first episode of konosuba, and I don’t really get a sense of flow or sync (other than some hard cuts with the hand claps), until 0:43 when the explosion syncs with the transition to the chorus (which was a nice touch) but then its straight back to the clip-show style of edit with barely any sync or direction.
I don’t want to assume how much effort was put into this edit but to me it feels like a rush job to make a vibe-y konosuba tribute without much thought put into it. I do realize that this video is probably very rewatchable for someone who likes this kind of music, but for me there really isn’t anything here.
(+) #44 Love bite
This is the kind of video I can just put on and vibe out for two-and-a-half minutes. I watched this show (first 6 eps) mainly for the art style and the nighttime vibes, and this edit absolutely nails the aesthetic! I love all the little overlays and subtle digital effects to used to accentuate the ‘lustful’ vibes this video exudes. Also, I love all your syncing choices in that it always felt fresh and never got predictable.
I will say that I’ve seen a lot of vids like this using the same anime and music style, but this is definitely one of the better ones!
(-) #45 Maladapted for television
Oh boy.. P!ATD is another band that makes me physically cringe >_<
I also don’t know anything about this tv show so I’m pretty sure I’m not the target audience for this video, but watching it (at 15% volume) I like a lot of your editing choices! Like where it turns to color at the transition to the chorus, then transitioning to a letterboxed AR in the 2nd verse. The whole thing does feel like it could be a “professionally edited” music video, and is strong in the storytelling sense, but because of the music its not one I can get into
(?) #46 Melodious gaze
I love that you picked a piano/string instrumental for a Shinkai tribute! The music perfectly encapsulates the beautiful melancholy his films always evoke, and instrumentals (for me) are a lot more effective at expressing a general vibe/emotion over a lyrical passage. Unfortunately, there’s quite a few editing choices that don’t really hit with me, and I feel like you might be over-editing at parts. For instance: the split screen at 1:15 doesn’t feel like its adding anything to the video, and really distracts me from appreciating the edit. Right after this theres a series of fast cuts that don’t feel in line with the music.
I also love the idea of inserting clips of Shinkai at work, but I feel like there should be more than a few at the beginning and end. I don’t know if that was a deliberate choice but I feel that if you had added just a touch more it would make it feel more concise.
In short I love this concept, however I feel it needs more focus in the execution.
(+) #47 Mission (im)possible
This anime/song combo is so obviously good I’m surprised its taken this long to see one made. The execution of it all is damn near flawless! Such smooth transitions between characters (I can’t tell if the one at 1:42 from Yor to Anya is native but it works so well), and your scene selections feel spot on for this type of vid. I love how you chose to focus on one character for long passages, and every one feels in line with where the music takes me.
Idk what else to say other than this is such a great tribute to SpyxFamily
(-) #48 Monster
This video is a classic example of “over-editing”. The overall concept is really good, but there is just too much unnecessary effects/transitions/sped-up clips that distract from what seems like some good storytelling. As someone who used to over-edit a lot you should focus more on setting up a mood in the beginning of a video, and hold yourself back from adding a bunch of effects until the intensity of the chorus hits and the tension gets released.
At 0:59 you have him lip sync where the singer says “I” but not for any of the other times he repeats that line, which really feels inconsistent and makes me want to see more lip sync. I saw a few other parts that might be lip-sync, but they feel very off and could just be lip-flap.
I had a hard time enjoying this video. Skillet is an artist that I personally dislike musically, but besides that there was just too much going on to really enjoy from a purely editing POV. Again I hope I’m not coming off as sounding mean, and I hope you find my critique useful!
(+) #49 My MCU movie
As someone who hasn’t watched anything past the first Deadpool movie I really enjoyed this video XD
Watching it feels like this song was made for the character, so good on you for picking this track! I love all the sound sync you added too (that butt slap tho) which adds a lot of charm. This video reminded me why I liked the first movie, and really made me want to watch the rest of the Deadpool films!
(-) #50 No chick-flick moments
Ok so this is a weird one. I’ve only heard this song in AMVs, and the one vid I mainly associate it with is an epic MMV by the one and only nekokitkat. So when I saw that it was used in a (live-action) vid of a show I had no awareness of until a few years ago (when THAT moment happened) I really didn’t want to watch it. But, after finally sitting down to watch it I can truthfully say that this is not a video for me. Since I don’t know anything about these characters I can’t really comment on the storytelling (it does seem coherent) but I do have a nitpick with the pacing in the beginning being too fast and story-driven. I’m sure someone who’s seen the show knows whats going on but for someone like me it feels like I’m watching random clips of high-drama with no real nuance to anything.
To be 100% honest I stopped watching only a minute in. I do see some more positive comments in kollaborate so this must be an enjoyable video to a lot of people, but I’m afraid I’m not one of them, and I don’t feel that any negative reactions from me is going to have any real benefit to you as an editor.
(+) #51 Not a cop
TOM CARDY LETS GOOOO
Ok but seriously, any time I see a new edit with a Tom Cardy song I get real excited! I’ve been let down only once or twice, but certainly not this video! Every time I hear one of his songs this is how I imagine its AMV should look like: quick and timely cuts, impeccable lipsync, and an editor who likes to have fun with the edit! I love all the little bits of masking and text effects (adding that gun was a great touch). Even tho I’ve never watched this anime all the characters you used seem to fit!
(+) #52 Nurture
I love the esoteric vibe of this video. I don’t know what you call this effect but it really added a real artistic touch. I don’t really know what else to say… HAIL SATAN
(-) #53
I do agree that combining this track with the deer anime was a clever move. However, as someone who’s been listening to this song for over two-decades, and knows about the lyric’s serious message about oppressive police states and violence against the innocent I cannot enjoy this video. In my eye it feels distasteful and disrespectful to turn it into an ironic gag video.
Again, this is just my personal feelings about it and I do not believe that was your intent.
(+) #54 On perspective
An Avatar: the last Airbender video? Focusing on Hama?? What a concept!
But seriously, I absolutely love that you even attempted a video like this with a single side character from a single episode. The Puppetmaster was one of my favorite eps, and I love Hama’s character as an ‘oppressed becoming the oppressor’ archetype.
Executing this as well as you did must have been challenging, since there is so little to use (I do see you used a few scenes from other episodes, but they were done very tastefully!) I love the subtle music sync at 0:46 where it switches to a minor key and you transition to darker times in the character’s life. The lyric sync in the middle parts are just on point enough to not become too on-the-nose and ‘cheesy’. The whole video is a great example of really good non-linear storytelling! Heckin’ excellent job
(?) #55 Overthrow
Watching this video kinda makes me feel numb. It feels like information overload with all the fast cuts to plotlines that I don’t know about (I haven’t seen this anime) to music that I don’t really care for. I get the sense this is made for someone who’s watched the anime, since most of the editing seems to be focused on storytelling.. but its all going over my head
(+) #56 Portals
Having already watched this movie makes it easier to get invested with the characters, and I particularly like the music so overall this video is an easy sell for me.
My predispositions aside, I do believe this is an excellent example of how to mix storytelling, concept and vibes into something great! I love how you use different objects that can represent ‘portals’ (doorways, eyes, etc.) and how cleverly placed they are. For instance, putting all the cuts of doors closing in front of the male character in sync with the beat.. then showing him open the door himself when the mix gets louder was such a great introduction to the theme. Your pacing and scene selection really works with the song’s vibe too.. and that sync with the raising train crossing and claps was so satisfying ;_;
This video gives me so many warm fuzzies, I adore it
(+) #57 Pound sand
When I saw there was a Wistoria edit in the contest I was very excited to see how well the action scenes would be used.. and I was not disappointed!
I’ll admit I’m not a fan of Set it off, but I still enjoyed this video! Your action sync really hit for me, and I loved all the manga panel overlays! I can tell a lot of love and creativity went into this. Definitely my favorite of the action vids!
(?) #58 Read my apoca-lips
I’ve never played fallout, nor have I watched the new show.. so I might not be the intended audience for this video. The editing seems fine to me, but I don’t really vibe with the music.
I don’t really have much to say about this but meh :p
(???) #59 RealEyes (etc.)
Ow my eyes! This is a really cool and unique video! I don’t know how you achieved this effect but I can’t say I’ve ever seen it outside of a magic-eye book, and certainly not in a full-length music video. This is definitely one of the most original and visual medium defying videos I’ve ever seen.. But like I said before: Ow my eyes!
(?) #60 Reflecting north
I never watched Love Hina but I always liked its art style (reminds me of Tenchi Muyo) so I like the aesthetics of this video. What misses with me is mainly in the storytelling and how it seems to rely on the view already knowing the couple’s story. Editing wise it feels concise and has nice flow.. but its hard for me to get attached to these characters.
(?) #61 Rule breaker’s beat
I really want to like this video… the editing is tight and well paced out to have the action scenes hit, and the storytelling is feels interesting and concise.. but I really dislike this song, unfortunately. Thats really just a personal taste thing, and I’m positive this video will resonate with a lot of Edgerunner fans, and action AMV fans in general!
(+) #63 Self portrait
If you would’ve told me someone used John Gage’s 4’33” in an AMV I would’ve yelled HOW?? Well this is how XD
I commend you for taking such an avant garde “non-song” and creating a really well thought out concept! Although I will say that adding a few more coughs and throats clearing would even out some of the long passages of dead air
(+) #64 Something good in me
This feels like it was made for someone who’s watched the anime (I haven’t) but I do like this for the nostalgic mood and the upbeat vibes I get from it.
(?) #65 Stay
This is another case of me not getting into a vid because of the music. This video feels like its strong on the storytelling with less emphasis on pure vibes, so as someone who hasn’t seen this movie its hard for me to get into it.
(+) #66 The Amazon
Always down for a Devilman Crybaby edit! I really like how this one has a different tone than most with a real subversive concept. Focusing on Akira and Ryo’s relationship also won me over (I’m a sucker for that type of ‘ship’) and I would even call this a ‘romance’ vid XD
I don’t know if that was your intent but I found this video to be a very interesting take on the two characters! Also, the flow in your editing is really expressive.
This is a very solid concept executed wonderfully!
(-) #67
*gulp*
Well this video really proved to me that the show Dexter is a bit too graphic gorey for me to watch.
This seems like a fine edit but I can’t watch this >_<
(+) #68 The detachable life
I can’t believe I’m watching an edit with ‘Detachable Penis’ in the year of our lord 2024 XD
What a deep cut from the 90s record bin! I think you picked a winner with Saiki K, his deadpan expression really fits the singer’s vocal inflection. Adding pixelation to whatever he’s holding at the end was a nice touch lol
(?) #69 The ultimates earths mightest heroes
This seems like a great start to a Marvel comic vid. I’ve never read one so I’m not the intended audience, but it looks pretty good so far. One big issue I have is the audio quality, which sounds like a highly compressed mp3 file.
(?) #71 There was a hole here. Its gone now.
I’ve never played Silent Hill so whatever in-joke is going on in your video is going right over my head (besides the obvious ‘Triangle man’)
I am a fan of this song tho, so its always nice to see it being used in a video.
(?) #72 Tulip with barley seeds
All these Bluey vids keep reminding me to watch the show.
This video is kind of lost on me. Mainly for having not watched the show, but the main focus on lyric sync makes the edit not my preferred style, and is hard to get into.
I’m sure I’ll change my mind on this once I’ve watched Bluey
(?) #73 Twifight
This video makes me wish AWA was still during Halloween.
I like the buildup of the two gunmen in the first verse, but I didn’t feel like the payoff in the chorus hit like I wanted it to. I don’t think it was any fault of your own tho, I think the song itself just doesn’t have the kind of payoff I was expecting. I think this is edited strongly, with some good sync and flow.. its just another case of ‘Syn is too picky about his music’ >_<
(+) #74 We are not who we are
This video was hard for me to get into at first.. probably because of how disconnected the music sounds from the visuals. Then as the vid went on, and whatever hellscape these workers are in kept getting more creepy and terrifying I could understand what your edit was going for. This is a good example of some confident editing! I’m very curious to watch the show now :0
(?) #75 We’ll play again soon
I’ve never watched or played anything Digimon, but I could still get a good sense of the characters you chose to focus on and what emotion you intended to evoke, so I’d say your editing is very solid in this video! It has a great blend of storytelling flow and music sync that makes it moderately enjoyable for someone like me. I’m sure if I was a Digimon kid I’d be eating this up, but its not really hitting me in the emotions (also not really a fan of the music) so thats why its getting the (?) mark.
(-) #76 Welcome to the original anime parade
This video concept has the potential to achieve AMV GREATNESS
‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ was never a song I was into, but I knew of its cultural weight. Its a songwriting masterpiece. The ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ of the 2000’s, if you will. So any AMV attempting a concept like this needs to be IMMACULATE
Unfortunately, I feel this video falls short in a few key areas that separate a decent video from a timeless classic that will be remembered for years to come. I’m going to get very opinionated here, but thats only because I WANT this to be a great video, so my goal is to let my critique help you… if you so choose
If you’re reading this then you’ve probably read the comments I left on kollaborate. I know they’re very blunt, but I was typing them out of frustration, and were not meant to be mean-spirited. But, the poor editing choices I was seeing were just too many for a video I felt had a Best-in-Show potential! So I’ll break this down into two big fixes that I am positive will get audiences hype:
I truly hope this helps, and didn’t come off as being too cynical. I love this vid concept and I felt like I needed to help in any way I could!
(+) #77 Where the acorns fall
I love this video, it exudes so much of what makes Ghibli great: simple organic storytelling, awareness of the natural world, and playful music that feels timeless yet fresh. I can’t watch and not keep a smile on my face Job well done, editor! You’ve distilled everything I love about My Neighbor Totoro into a simple 3-minute video!
(?) #78 Without fear
This isn’t the kind of song I prefer listening to, but I can tell how much thought was put into this video. The pacing in the storytelling feels very organic and easy to follow for someone who hasn’t seen the movie/show. But because of the song I have a hard time staying engaged. Great job tho! I do believe this is a well put together edit
(?) #79 Without me
This is a really fun video concept! I feel that there needs to be some more attention to the lip sync and the pacing. There’s parts where the lip sync feels very off-time (namely 0:56 where its about a half-second, or around 10-12 frames too early) and some scenes feel like they drag on a bit too much, which affects the pacing a lot.
(+) #80 You’re not a wizard Harry
I wasn’t aware of this song until watching your video, but I thought it was funny it started almost the exact same way the last video did lol. But yeah, this vid is hilarious XD and I believe your tight editing is what makes it work! There’s very minimal lip sync, but you were able to balance that out with some nicely synced action/comedy shots. Abracadabra indeed!
(?) #81 Zettaflare
When I saw who was listed as the music artist(s) in the video I was like HOOO BOY.. thats quite the trifecta of ‘Syn repellent’ XD
Watching the video from purely an editors’ POV I can say this has some really nice flow that matches the intensity of the lyrics, with some spectacular transitions and match cuts! But because you’ve used a song that features some of my least favorite artists, and games I’ve never been interested in playing, this is not a video I can say I enjoy watching >_<
But in all seriousness, I do believe this is a great video concept that was executed brilliantly!
- I will be giving every video my very most honest and candid reaction/emotional response.
- I have organized every video into three categories of how I reacted:
- positive (+) your video elicited an overall positive reaction! it could be your editing, or just that you used one of my favorite animes/songs but either way I'll gush and try to give you reasons why I liked it.
- negative (-) your video elicited an overall negative reaction! it could be your editing, or just that you used one of my least favorite artists either way I will try to give you reasons why I didn't like it. I will also give you my promise that I do not intend to disrespect or insult you or your video in any way.. and I promise to say at least one nice thing about it!
- neutral (?) your video didn't elicit a strong reaction out of me! it could be your editing, or that I'm just a dense buffoon that doesn't get your nuanced edit either way I will try to give you reasons why your video didn't hit with me.
Spoiler :
My predispositions aside, I do believe this is an excellent example of how to mix storytelling, concept and vibes into something great! I love how you use different objects that can represent ‘portals’ (doorways, eyes, etc.) and how cleverly placed they are. For instance, putting all the cuts of doors closing in front of the male character in sync with the beat.. then showing him open the door himself when the mix gets louder was such a great introduction to the theme. Your pacing and scene selection really works with the song’s vibe too.. and that sync with the raising train crossing and claps was so satisfying ;_;
- INSTRUMENT/LIP SYNC & REMOVE LIP FLAP - at the 1 min mark we see a band playing, and then a singer is clearly singing, but there are no vocals in the song. This starts the video off on a very awkward feeling for the viewer, expecting to see the band in sync with the music. Also at 1:17 we see Vivy clearly singing.. but we’re not hearing any vocals. Same thing when we get to the Girls Band Cry section. I’d highly suggest reworking these areas by rearranging some clips and saving the ones with characters singing for when the song’s vocals are heard. I believe this would drastically improve the quality of the video.
- SLOW DOWN UR CLIPS - ooof man some of these clips are going at such blinding speeds its distracting. I get why you sped them up (I use the same trick!) but a lot of them are going so fast you really can’t see whats happening. I don’t know how fast you’ve set them (some feel like they’re at 600% or faster!) but I’d suggest going no faster than 300%.
