While I can't say anything about professionalism since I haven't seen the entries for this round yet, I can certainly imagine why there are a lot of newbies (including myself) drawn to a competition like this. This involves clips 30 seconds or shorter, which is a very non-threatening length to work with for one's first stab at AMV-making. Also, the association with popular works like the AMV Hell series is bound to draw in more people than if this were just a regular 30-seconds-or-less contest.

For me specifically, I feel I did fairly well with what I turned out for this round. I would like to try my hand at something set to a full-length (but still short) song in the near future, if I have time. :) Having a bit of experience to go from thanks to working with the short AMV Hell entry, I now know a few more things I can avoid/take into account with my programs and my editing skills before I start (i.e.: iMovie's annoying timeline quirks, knowing how long it generally takes to rip footage on my compy, figuring the best points to make cuts and synchs, etc). Better to know that sort of thing from the beginning on one's first longer project, I say. :)

Anyway, I guess I shouldn't say that like I'm implying a lot of us newbies should be using AMV Hell CE as a testing ground for our first AMVs. Like you said, lots of newbie work can equal a high amount of unprofessionalism among the total entries submitted. ^^; Just saying I know why it would happen. And that not all the newbies will turn out crap (at least I hope that's so; everyone's opinions on what's crap are different).
