That's not really the issue here. Anime companies look the other way because AMV creators aren't profiting from their hobby. Giving out DVD prizes is a way of marketing, giving out money is profiting.

Well, I ment ethical in the sence of "do you want to be involved in something that endangers the community like that?" It's also a legal issue yes, but not much more so than AMV making/distributign in general.kunaiinyourback wrote:It's not really an ethical issue- it's more of a legal one.
If your neighbor is constantly breaking laws and ordinances on a community level (no lids on trash cans, messy yard, junk cars, untrimmed shrubs/bushes) and you get along with him you're not going to report him. He slaps you in the face the next day and insults you - you might be that much more willing to pick up the phone.

The gift card is something we added to help the creators. I was hoping that a person would use it to help their skills evolve. Originally, I was trying to do something like a region free dvd player but I don't know how many people have DVD players. We tried to get a bunch businesses to help us also but could only get a couple. If creators feel uncomfortable with this as a prize, then I can swap it out for something nice like a DVD player or maybe a game system like a DS.
The idea I had was that the a person would use it to add some more memory to their computer or get that hard drive so they can have extra works space. I understand your view since I have made AMVs myself and won a contest, so I mean no harm in offering it.
I just hope that people will enter. I have seen many contests be ignored just because they are a small convention and do not have alot of attendance. This is why I am trying to get as many artists to enter which is also why I offer both mail in and online submissions. I want to make our AGMV contest to be fantastic.
I just hope that people help us out on our first year because we want this convention to continue every year and a great AGMV contest will help keep us alive.
But long the line I said earlier, how would you guys, as the creator, receiving a DS or something along those lines instead of a gift card. Or maybe I can contact the winner and they can tell me what they want within reason and I can pick it up and give/mail it to them?
Please give me some feedback.

I Agree, The giftcard is better for the creator. If lets say I won a 150$ from this. I woulden't buy something for myself, I'd just buy something to help my work. Example- I would prob buy an additional Hard drive so I can store more high quality source footage. I'm also thinking about upgrading my CPU to a Dual core so I can render faster and such. Anyway, it was a superb idea to go with the giftcard over something else in my opinion.
