I have an update on the sponsors. DragonCon management is often unwilling to offer perks to sponsors and sponsors often want perks from the con versus perks from just the anime room. If anyone can lead me to some potential sponsors that would be helpful. Please note that the sponsors are not sponsoring DragonCon, they are only sponsoring the event.
Regarding anime contests charging:
I realize most contests dont charge - but the *DO* charge - they are hosted by Anime conventions that DO go out and get sponsorships - it all ends up being rolled into their membership fee.
Although the entry fee is in place that may change.
We appreciate all the feedback we are getting.
I hope this helps.

Come on guys!! I'm really trying hard here. I just don't want to see a lot of coochie and wankers in the videos. Personally I don't want to see Akira getting his limbs ripped off either and if you want me to stick that in the rules I will.sixstop wrote:take note in the rules; in addition to interpreting something as a political statement that they're not interested in overtly sexual content rated pg-13.
Tho i'm sure they'll have no problem with heavy ultraviolence beyond pg-13 instead...
You are really talking to one of the people in charge of this crap.

I'm all for trying to help here and give constructive feedback, so just some suggestions...
For Animethon I go out and get my trophies sponsored and get prizes donated... Why? Well, because the AMV contest is a popular event and as such you want to get as many good videos as possible. If you charge and are the only one, how many people are you going to get when most are free? The way I cost justify it to the Directors of the con is that the contest is a popular Programming segment that will add to the overall enjoyment of the con... I mean there are lots of events at a con and I don't see them charging for everything that gives away prizes. If Say $0.10 of the entry fee is used for AMV contest, then I that should be fine as the event is one reason people enjoy themselves just like panels, dances, etc and the contest is worth that much at least…
The note about the politics.. I would be careful about that because I can make a real good video that may have a hidden statement and determining if it's out right deliberate is going to be impossible in most cases so who is going to draw the line here? (who determines the criteria if it’s political or not???) Personally I've never seen this as a problem before at any contest and it's really hard to judge something like this unless it’s blatantly obvious... That pretty much why most cons have the rules that the AMV coordinator and con reserve the right to final decisions on disqualification. That way if something outside of the rules that can’t be shown is submitted, there is a way out without stating something so specific…
The reason I bring all this up is, that as a smaller AMV contest it’s hard just to get entries as it is.. Now Rules are important, but you want to make sure they don’t turn away creators from entering.

Well Vlad, aside from the horrible formatting, the political statement and the fee are the rules pretty good?
I'm working on the items you mentioned and I'll keep you all updated.
Please bare with me since this is the first one we have done and not all the kinks are worked out yet apparently.
We are also looking for technical judges if you are going to be there and you are interested I"ll definetly keep you in mind.

just offering a different perspective here...
Of course if the management gives you no resources to seek prizes and cover technical costs, then getting sponsor help is basically tilting a windmill.
So basically you're charging an entrance fee for an anime music video contest that takes place at a general sci-fi/fantasy con, where anime is shown in one room. You've ruled out lets say 1/5 of entrants on content, and then made it clear that you find certain subject material for music videos to be unacceptable on principal alone?
... did Akira get his limbs ripped off? i thought that was tetsuo and his was burned off...
...which, depending on the content of the con, in this case general media and not anime, thats pretty typical. The management has pretty consistantly demonstrated for a while that it doesn't care to extend any great measure to anime content at D*C. Or to the people who oft contribute to the anime room either.I have an update on the sponsors. which is why no-one should be surprised that the contest co-ordinator is basically fending for themself. Just don't expect too many people to clamor to pay a fee. Where are the entries going to be screened? How many people will the room hold? What day will the contest be shown?Regarding anime contests charging:

never doubted we were. I dunno how much of a fan of this stuf you are yourself, but there is a significant chunk of new content that basically goes out the window according to your description. And then this political statement stuff, by whos standard is that judged?Come on guys!! I'm really trying hard here. I just don't want to see a lot of coochie and wankers in the videos. Based on the criticism of this forum I have forwarded the complaints and my opinion on to the director. We will have some more solid answers next week regarding sponsorship.
I do not know who the panel of judges will be at this time nor do I have the specifics on the room or the time. A lot of the finer details about DragonCon are being taken care of still. We felt that getting a working set of rules out so that people would be aware that we are going for it this year was better than nothing but I'm getting the impression that I was wrong in my thinking.
I will not defend my tastes on this forum but you can complain all you like when you see me at DragonCon and you see what I put in the anime room line up. I do not judge others on their tastes and I hope to receive the same respect. You can sit there and say "oh sh$t" the anime room is going to suck this year but you won't know until you show up. I have not said there could be no violence I have only said there can be no genitalia as it is not approiate by American standards and those are the rules I am bound by.

Honestly I know how you guys are feeling. I ran the anime video room for a couple years before this current group took it over since myself and the other guy working it couldn't split our time between AWA and DC, when DC obviously was not going to take care of us.
That aside I do hope you hit one out of the park here but I really think the problem you will encounter is just getting submissions for free let alone if you are going charge a fee. While DC does have name recognition unlike a lot of start up cons it suffers from some of the worst management of any con I have ever attended or worked for in thier attitude towards anime in general. As much as any of us want DC to do well I have banged my head against that wall too many times to hold out hope that you will be allowed any real assitance.... in other words... good luck getting out of the basement.
Not trying to discourage you but just saying been there done that... got the T-shirt which I wear to wash my car. Good Luck.

Just a thought in passing:
Eliminate the entry fee. I seriously doubt they'd pay it.
For year one be creative and ask D*Con itself to "sponsor" the event. The prizes can be 1-day, 2-day, and whole con passes for next years dragoncon. If a trophy of some sort must happen Make something. Get creative.
As one of the few people reading this that has both experience with DCon (11 years staff, 1 year director) AND AWA (specifically a lot of my friends work in the AMV room and i'm a certified fangirl of AMV creators) (also director for 3 years)
Lots of AWA people have something against DCon for not exactly being attentive to their needs. DCon didn't used to cater to an anime crowd but my guess is that its possible to sway their opinion of the matter. PACK that room. keep records of attendance, take pictures of the people spilling into the hallway. I will personally do my best to nudge people into submiting though i'm not magical The ability to submit things that have previously won at other cons will probably open the door to a lot of submissions. In fact, we have shown AMVs at the dragoncon consuite for 3 years now. However, they've only been tapes that people have made for me. (betcha never even noticed that...)
I hope you succeed in this endeavor as Anime/AMVs are growing in popularity. If you come up with any AMV/consuite related promotions I would be happy to help you. In fact we serve a good deal of rice and asian inspired food in consuite. We could hold a theme hour and show some AMVs. I would have to clear this with Joe (of course) but its possible and it could be fun.

Thank you so much for your support.
The registration fee has changed. If you buy a full 4-day membership to DragonCon 2006 there is no fee to enter the amv contest. I suggest you buy them now before they reach full price.
As far as the room goes. I was pretty mad last year over them playing 6 hours of amvs at night because it excluded the people that are night-owls. The guy that used to do the line up completely has been working with me but I'm doing the majority of the line up now. I've convinced the director that 6 hours of amvs is a little boring to some con goers so this year I'm putting amvs as fillers at the top of the hour. This will get the anime room more in line with the rest of the DC schedule. This means you won't have to miss the final episode of a show in order to make it to the interview you just have to see. I'm also going to see about playing adult oriented shows between midnight ang 6 am. I'm hoping for stuff like Colorful, Elven Lied, Tales of Titilation and plenty of other violent, sexual and just plain pretty anime with good story lines. I'm staying away from ones that are poorly brought over from a Manga.
I've got pretty much exclusive control over the line up I just don't know about the rating although I don't think it will be a problem since the video room plays R-rated stuff all the time.
