I believe that you do an injustice to the AMV fans, which far outnumber the AMV creators, by not allowing the best of the comedy videos to compete simply because they might be far better than the other competitors. Furthermore, you do an injustice to those of us who will compete. I consider myself lucky if I even make it into a contest. But, if by some weird stroke of luck I ever won, I wouldn't want to think that I won because the best were not allowed to compete.
Problem is that Hell videos aren't always the best, but they still win because the audience is a sucker for them, and this is coming from someone who's won his share of prizes with a Hell vid.

This is a good move for Otakon, let real videos shine.

I say let the fans decide what the "real videos" are. If the fans say that video X is the best at that show, then it doesn't really matter what the editors say.

Back to the idea of which movie is better. The one that wins more Oscars or the one that sells more tickets?

Maybe that's where the judges awards vs the fans awards comes into play?

I know many cons have judges and fan awards, but Otakon is ALL ABOUT THE FANS! To add in judges awards to please the creators would be wrong. If Otakon is truely about the fans, then it is a fan voted convention. That's how the contest has always been. Right? I know we have seen it happen many times that the best video does not win. Espcially when a comedy type video wins in Action or Romance. Otakon is still a nice contest for the reason that the attendence is large and Otakon still gets a lot of submissions many of which were good last year.

Fixed.
"If someone feels the need to 'express' himself or herself with a huge graphical 'singature' that has nothing to do with anything, that person should reevaluate his or her reasons for needing said form of expression, possibly with the help of a licensed mental health practitioner."

jbone is right... while the con and everything at it might be for the fans enjoyment, things aren't like they were years ago when cons were a new idea. Now adays you have to work within the law, deal with industry, try to please as many people as possible while never being able able to please everyone...
It's not even just a matter of what a department head wants for his department either... but what other staff want for it as well (so they will work with you more).
It is indeed politics... and it's a shame because all it does is get in the damn way. But things are the way they are, and it won't go away just because you want it too.

Having Judges would make things easier for staff and better for the creator (via a later deadline)... but member voting is just what Otakon does... and it would be a shame to get rid of it now. Seems too much like a step in the wrong direction.

I was wrong...

Post by Adv1sor » Sat Nov 25, 2006 3:54 pm

Ok, so I was wrong.

I just finished watching the 13 episode series, LAIN - SERIAL EXPERIMENT.

This was one great anime series. Great, but, well, would I watch it again? No.

Last week I watched FLCL for the third or fourth time. Will I watch it again, oh yeah, many more times most likely.

If the Academy Awards ever evolve, which series would be more likely to win an Oscar?

If we left it to the people then, eventually, all we would have would be DBZ, Naruto, FLCL style comedy and fan service. Shows like Lain, or movies like Grave of the Fireflies might never even be made.

Ok, now I'm in far too deep for AMVs.

You were right, the AMV Hell type AMVs don't belong in the same category as regular comedy AMVs.

Politics? well, I hope not.

Back to my original suggestion. Just show all the accepted AMVs in reverse order of the date they were received and let the fans decide what wins what category!

They'd likely both win in different categories. You're comparing apples and oranges here.

If you can say this with a straight face then you live under a goddamned rock.

Don't curse my rock, it's the only rock I could afford...

Looking back over the post I see that I got a bit carried away. This is, after all, just for fun. I think that Otakon does a good job of making the contest fun for both the editors and the fans. I'm sure that we will have a great show again this year.

....what? What does the order of the date they were received have anything to do with things?
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

I am thinking that those shown later in the contest are better remembered by the fans. You would need a way to determine the order, so why not use a method that encourages / rewards earlier submittals?

But it seems that this has been tried and failed so I guess it won't be tried again.

Still, the old CCG tourney player in me would like to see a real competition done this way. Hand out the ballots to everyone who enters. Collect them from everyone who leaves after staying for the full show and not from any other source. Let the fans say what wins what and see what we have. Hmmm, I could see where this much rigidity could suck all the fun right out of the event... On with the show! I've said way too much about this now.
