I've attended some cons where they are.Kionon wrote:Then maybe just pick two genres?godix wrote:Perhaps the 2 vid rule would work better if at least one of the vids is required to be a non-drama entry. Granted, since there aren't preset categories that might pose a bit of a problem but still something to consider
But then someone will think drama, sentimental, and romance are all individual categories.
When does voting end for AWA Pro?

Almost as cliche as how redundant the pro thread is every year. IE: Man PRO SUCKS, THERE'S TOO MUCH ROMANCE/DRAMA, last year was better etc.The Wired Knight wrote:I'll be honest, I found pro dissapointing this year.
Romance videos are RIDICULOUSLY cliché.
there were some good videos, don't get me wrong, but overall I think Pro has been stronger in the past.
Yea yea it's a broken record.
So what if you have to go sifting through videos to find the few you like? It doesn't change the fact there's still some really great vids that might not have come to fruition unless people were challenging themselves for the contest.

Agreed, that was one of my favorites.Sephiroth wrote:scissor sisters/death note
That made pro fun this year
As far as requiring people to make videos in different categories if they submit two... was that really a problem this year?? That seems to me like it would be self-correcting... you wouldn't want to submit two videos in the same category since you'd be competing against yourself. But anyway, since the categories aren't set until well after submitting the videos, it would be nigh on impossible to enforce. Sure, we know there will be the central 'mood' categories, but it would rather change the dynamic if we had to list what category it fell into. Besides... from what I've heard of other cons and saw myself at the Otakon pre-screening (and let's face it- it's always been this way...) there's just a higher percentage of drama/romance/serious videos being made than the 'lighter' genres.

Not necessarily. Yes some people will always say "last year was better" but often that is a repetitive cycle with little foundation.Moonlight Soldier wrote:Almost as cliche as how redundant the pro thread is every year. This year there was too much romance (drama I don't care) and the fact that they almost all used the same source made the repetitiveness and cliché aspects of this genre of AMVs.
Most Romance AMVs I realized include just slow slongs with any mixture of the following
Characters staring into the sky
Slow pans of either plains or cityscapes
Characters just standing or sitting there next to each other
Characters staring longingly into objects or windows
These four shots make up about 65% of any romance video and 90% of the romance entries in Pro this year. Top it off by adding in slow paced music that all starts to sound the same (slow, often female vocals with mostly interchangable lyrics).
The cliché elements of romance were far more blatant this year due to the number of romance videos and the fraction of them that were shinkai which made it all the more unbearable.
Ever watched a Jiang yi Mo (sp?) movie? Now, have you ever watched ALL of them within a week? While the first oen or two may seem unique or special, the fact is get enough of what is looking substantially the same in rapid succession and it will start to wear on you and it no longer is unique and is just tired and repetitive.

Although I agree with you in theory about the blandness and mediocrity of a lot of Romance videos, I think you're over-generalizing things. Yes, many videos do these things, but to me the things a good video does are actually quite subtle and aren't a HUGE departure from the things listed. It's cliche to say, but it's the small things that make a romance video go from Mediocre to Good for me. It's hard to explain, but there are some videos I adore b/c of their subtlety in syncs (i.e. syncing to something that's not obvious), attention to detail and musical flow, clever scene selection, etc.The Wired Knight wrote:Not necessarily. ...and this is coming from someone who makes a lot of Romance videos AND is a very harsh critic of most. I think I said at the Otakon panel something along the lines of "If I really like your romance video, Iwill adore you forever" b/c it's true. I *love* finding a truly great romance video. Although yes, I do agree many are quite bland, formulaic and mediocre (including my own ).
